The QS World University Rankings, published annually by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), is one of the three most-cited global university league tables alongside the CWTS Leiden Ranking and Times Higher Education’s World University Rankings. Unlike the Leiden Ranking, which is built entirely from computed bibliometric data, QS’s score is a composite of survey-based reputation measures, citation data licensed from Elsevier’s Scopus, and institution-submitted data on staffing and internationalization. That mix is the single most important thing to understand about the ranking: more than half of an institution’s score does not come from research output at all, and knowing which inputs move which way matters for anyone citing a QS position in an institutional report or grant narrative.
The nine indicators, and their exact weights
As of the 2026 edition, QS scores every ranked institution against nine indicators. Eight are weighted; a ninth, introduced in 2026, is reported but does not currently affect the overall score.

QS also reports a tenth metric, International Student Diversity, new to the 2026 edition — the count of distinct nationalities represented in the student body. It is displayed alongside a university’s profile but is not currently weighted into the overall score, so two institutions with identical weighted totals can show different diversity figures without that affecting their rank.
Why the two reputation surveys dominate the score
Academic Reputation and Employer Reputation together account for 45% of the total — more than double the weight of Citations per Faculty, the only indicator computed directly from published research output. Both surveys ask respondents (academics for the first, employers for the second) to name institutions they consider strong in their field, without requiring the respondent to cite specific evidence. This is the mechanical reason QS scores are more stable for large, long-established, English-speaking-world institutions with high name recognition than for younger or non-Anglophone institutions doing comparably strong research: reputation surveys measure awareness as much as, or more than, current output.
This is also the specific point of friction between QS’s methodology and the responsible-metrics movement CASRAI already tracks in depth. DORA and CoARA both argue against evaluating research primarily through proxy indicators disconnected from the underlying work being assessed — a critique that applies with particular force to a survey-weighted 45% of a league-table score. The Leiden Manifesto, produced by the same institute behind a computed, survey-free alternative ranking, makes the same argument even more directly: its first principle is that quantitative evaluation should support, not substitute for, qualitative expert assessment — and a global perception survey is neither.
Citations per Faculty: the one indicator with a real denominator problem
Citations per Faculty (CPF) divides an institution’s total Scopus-indexed citations by its faculty headcount, which means the indicator rewards institutions with fewer academic staff relative to research output. QS caps the influence of extreme outliers and applies field-normalization adjustments to keep the fastest-citing disciplines (biomedicine, for example) from dominating the number, but the underlying denominator issue is structural: a research-intensive institution with a comparatively small teaching faculty will outperform a similarly productive institution that carries a larger teaching load per researcher, independent of research quality. How QS relates to Times Higher Education and ARWU
QS, Times Higher Education (THE), and the Shanghai Ranking (ARWU) are often referred to collectively as the “big three” global rankings, and it is common for the same institution to place meaningfully differently across all three in the same year. The proximate cause is methodology, not a difference in underlying research quality: THE’s ranking also uses reputation surveys but weights them lower than QS does and adds a teaching-environment pillar; ARWU uses no survey data at all and instead scores almost entirely on hard bibliometric and prize-based indicators (alumni and staff Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, highly-cited researcher counts, and Nature/Science publication counts), which is why ARWU results move far less year to year than QS or THE results for the same institution. A research office citing a QS position in an external report should specify “QS World University Rankings” by name, not “world university rankings” generically — the same institution’s THE and ARWU positions in the same year can differ by dozens of places purely from the choice of which system’s inputs are being reported.
What changes a QS rank, and what does not
- Survey response volume and composition can shift a score even if research output is unchanged. Because Academic and Employer Reputation are the two heaviest-weighted indicators, a change in which academics or employers respond to QS’s annual surveys in a given cycle can move a score without any underlying change at the institution.
- Faculty headcount reporting changes CPF mechanically. An institution that reclassifies research-only staff out of its reported faculty headcount will see its Citations per Faculty figure rise, independent of any change in citations received.
- Methodology revisions are not backdated consistently. QS has added indicators in recent editions — International Research Network, Employment Outcomes, and Sustainability all postdate the ranking’s original core methodology — and reduced Academic Reputation’s weight from an earlier 40% to make room for them; year-over-year rank comparisons that predate a methodology change are comparing different formulas, not just different data.
- Ranking movement is not evidence of a change in research quality on its own. Because more than half of the score is reputation-, staffing-, or internationalization-based rather than output-based, a rank change is frequently a measurement artifact rather than a signal that should drive institutional strategy without further investigation.

QS separately publishes QS World University Rankings by Subject, which uses a different, subject-specific weighting (typically emphasizing Academic Reputation, Employer Reputation, and citations/h-index within that subject) and produces a different rank for the same institution than its overall position.
Can CASRAI Dictionary or CRIS infrastructure verify a QS score directly?
No. QS’s reputation-survey data and its institution-submitted figures are proprietary to QS’s own data-collection process; there is no public API or persistent identifier that resolves to a verifiable, machine-readable QS score the way a DOI resolves to a publication record. Institutions wanting an auditable, field-normalized alternative for internal use typically pair QS citation figures with independently computed values from their CRIS or bibliometric platform rather than relying on QS’s reported number alone.
