Does Zotero have an official AI feature?+
No. As of this writing, Zotero itself has no first-party AI assistant. Every AI chat/search capability inside Zotero comes from a third-party plugin built by an independent developer or open-source community, not from the Zotero project itself.
Is it safe to use an AI plugin with an unpublished or sensitive research library?+
Check the specific plugin’s data-handling policy first. Most of these plugins send some combination of your library metadata and PDF full text to a third-party AI provider’s servers (either the plugin’s own backend or a model you connect via API key), which may not be appropriate for embargoed, unpublished, or otherwise sensitive material without institutional sign-off.
Do I need to pay for ChatGPT Plus to use these plugins?+
It depends on the plugin. ARIA and some PapersGPT tiers require an existing ChatGPT Plus subscription. Beaver, ZotAI, and llm-for-zotero instead let you connect your own API key from a provider of your choice (or, for Beaver, offer a subscription plan as an alternative to managing API billing yourself).
What is the difference between a Zotero AI plugin and a tool like Weava or Anara?+
