Are CRIS and RIMS really the same thing?+
Functionally, yes, in almost all cases. 'CRIS' is more common in Europe and tied historically to the CERIF standard via euroCRIS; 'RIMS' is more common in North America and Australia. Vendors and industry bodies such as OCLC Research and ACRL use the terms interchangeably.
Is an institutional repository a type of CRIS?+
No. A repository predates the CRIS/RIMS category and solves a narrower problem — storing and preserving full-text outputs. Some CRIS/RIMS products now bundle repository functionality as a module, which blurs the line in practice, but a standalone repository is not itself a CRIS.
Can an institution use a repository without a CRIS?+
Yes. Many smaller institutions do, especially where national research-assessment reporting obligations are limited. Institutions typically add CRIS/RIMS capability as reporting and researcher-profile needs grow.
