Is Fedora a repository you install and use directly?+
Not on its own. Fedora is a back-end digital-object architecture and API, not an end-user-facing repository -- institutions pair it with a front-end application such as Islandora (built on Drupal) or Hyrax/Samvera (built on Ruby on Rails) before researchers or the public interact with it.
Which of these four platforms is free?+
DSpace, EPrints, and Fedora are all open source and free to download and run. Digital Commons is a paid, commercial SaaS product with a recurring subscription/license fee and no self-hosting option.
Can DSpace or EPrints function as a CRIS?+
Not out of the box. DSpace has the community-maintained DSpace-CRIS extension, which adds people, project, and organization entities on top of a standard DSpace install. EPrints has no equivalent native extension and is typically deployed alongside a separate CRIS/RIM system instead.
