BBSRC (Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council)

BBSRC compared with adjacent UKRI councils

Because bioscience sits close to several other disciplines, BBSRC’s remit boundary with neighbouring UKRI councils is a common point of confusion for applicants:

  • BBSRC vs MRC — BBSRC funds the underpinning, non-clinical biology (mechanisms, model organisms, fundamental processes); MRC funds biomedical, clinical, and translational research aimed directly at human health and disease. A project studying the cell biology of ageing might sit with BBSRC; a clinical trial testing an anti-ageing therapy in patients sits with MRC.
  • BBSRC vs NERC — BBSRC’s environmental-adjacent work (crop science, soil microbiology relevant to agriculture) can look similar to NERC’s environmental and ecosystem science; the distinguishing factor is usually whether the biotechnology/food-security/agricultural application is central (BBSRC) or the environmental system itself is the primary object of study (NERC).
