Editorial commentary
Engagement metrics complement impact metrics by measuring the intermediate processes that often precede impact. Common indicators include numbers of engagement events, participant counts, demographic reach, follow-up engagement, partner co-development, stakeholder advisory-board composition, and altmetric attention. NCCPE's EDGE tool maps engagement at institutional level. Engagement metrics are increasingly required by funders (Wellcome PE evaluation, UKRI KEF, NIHR PPI reporting) but face methodological challenges: counts of activity often do not capture depth, and engagement quality is fundamentally qualitative.
