Editorial commentary
Equipment provision covers the supply of specialised equipment, reagents, materials, animals, samples, or computational infrastructure that materially enabled a research output — captured under CRediT’s Resources role when the provision includes some intellectual input on how it was used, or in acknowledgements when it is purely a supply relationship with no further involvement in the work.
How it differs from related terms: The line to technical staff contribution is whether the credit is for supplying something (Resources) or for the hands-on technical labour of using it (Investigation or Data curation) — a lab that provides a unique mouse strain and a technician who runs the resulting experiments on that strain are credited differently, even on the same paper. A custom-engineered instrument built specifically for the study, with the provider also advising on its use, can warrant authorship; an off-the-shelf reagent purchased from a commercial vendor does not — the vendor is a supplier, not a contributor.
Where equipment or materials come with a commercial relationship, such as the provider’s own company or a paid consultancy, that relationship should be disclosed alongside the credit, consistent with standard conflict-of-interest reporting.
