Examples

Worked examples

  • Is an instance

A laboratory that provided a unique mouse strain, acknowledged with a citation to the strain's original paper

Counter-examples

Looks similar, but isn't

  • Not an instance

A commercial vendor of standard reagents is not a credited contributor (they are a supplier)

Editorial commentary

The distinction from authorship turns on intellectual contribution: providing a custom-engineered probe and helping design how it is used can warrant authorship; providing an off-the-shelf reagent typically warrants acknowledgement. The provider’s affiliation and any commercial relationship should be disclosed.
