Frontiersin Impact Factor: Journal-Level JIF 2026

A Frontiers journal's Impact Factor is that individual journal's Clarivate Journal Impact Factor (citations in the JCR year to items from the previous two years, divided by citable items in those two years), as displayed on its frontiersin.org page; Frontiers has no single publisher-wide JIF.

Editorial commentary

Frontiers Impact Factor is not one number. Frontiers Media publishes many journals, and the Journal Impact Factor (JIF) is calculated for each journal separately. Each Frontiers journal page on frontiersin.org shows its own Impact Factor and CiteScore. There is no single JIF for the Frontiers publisher as a whole.

What “Frontiersin impact factor” means

Searchers typing “frontiersin impact factor” usually want the Journal Impact Factor of a specific journal on frontiersin.org, such as Frontiers in Physiology or Frontiers in Neuroscience. The JIF is a Clarivate Journal Citation Reports (JCR) metric; Frontiers repeats the figure on each journal page. For the general metric, see Journal Impact Factor.

Frontiers journals with a JIF (portfolio level, read 2026-11-07)

According to Frontiers’ own impact page (frontiersin.org/about/impact, read 2026-11-07), 146 of the journals Frontiers publishes have a Journal Impact Factor and 160 journals have a CiteScore, following the 2026 release of JCR (JCR 2025 data year). The same page states that 11 journals rank first in their JCR category and 15 rank first in their Scopus category, and that of the journals that already had a JIF, 92% saw an increase. The highest JIF listed in its table is 11.9, for the British Journal of Biomedical Science, with a CiteScore of 12.7.

These are publisher-reported counts.

Examples read on journal pages

Journal Impact Factor shown CiteScore shown Source, date read
Frontiers in Physiology 4.3 8.0 frontiersin.org/journals/physiology, 2026-11-07
Frontiers in Neuroscience 4.0 7.4 frontiersin.org/journals/neuroscience, 2026-11-07

These pages do not label the JCR data year next to the figure, so treat the value as the publisher’s current display and re-read it on the day you need it. Figures change with each annual JCR release. For another Frontiers title, see Frontiers in Immunology’s Journal Impact Factor.

How the JIF is calculated

The JIF for a given JCR year is the number of citations received in that year by items the journal published in the previous two years, divided by the number of citable items the journal published in those two years. It is a two-year journal-level average, so it says little about any single article. A step-by-step lookup route is in how to look up a journal’s impact factor.

Other metrics shown for Frontiers journals

CiteScore is Scopus-based and is shown beside the Impact Factor on Frontiers journal pages (160 journals, per the impact page above). SJR and quartile rankings come from SCImago Journal & Country Rank, which lists Frontiers journals separately. Each metric uses a different database and window, so values are not interchangeable.

Cautions on use

  • Compare a JIF only within the same subject category and the same JCR year.
  • A publisher-wide statement such as “most Frontiers journals rose” (92% of those with a prior JIF, per Frontiers) is not evidence about a particular journal.
  • The JIF does not measure the quality of an individual paper; see the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA), which recommends against using journal-based metrics as a surrogate for article quality.
  • Older values (for example 2019 to 2023 figures) belong to earlier JCR releases and should not be quoted as current.

Frequently asked questions

What is the impact factor of Frontiers in Neuroscience?

The Frontiers in Neuroscience journal page showed an Impact Factor of 4.0 and a CiteScore of 7.4 when read on 2026-11-07. Check the page again for the current display.

Which journal has the highest impact factor?

Among Frontiers journals, Frontiers’ impact page lists the British Journal of Biomedical Science highest, with a JIF of 11.9 (read 2026-11-07). Which journal is highest across all publishers depends on the JCR year and is a question for Clarivate’s JCR, not for any one publisher’s page.

Is Frontiers in Climate a predatory journal?

CASRAI does not issue legitimacy verdicts on journals. Frontiers’ peer-review model and its standing with indexers and publishing bodies are described in Is Frontiers peer reviewed? and Frontiers collaborative peer review. Check any journal against the indexers’ own lists, such as the Web of Science and Scopus coverage lists.

What is frontier science?

“Frontier science” is a general phrase for research at the edge of current knowledge; it is not a metric or a standard. Frontiers in Science is a separate journal title published by Frontiers, so a search for it returns frontiersin.org pages. For comparing Frontiers titles in one field, see Frontiers in Neurology vs Frontiers in Neuroscience.
