It is a sequence of named, purpose-built sections, each governed by conventions that a peer reviewer, journal editor, or indexing database expects to find in a specific order. Knowing what each part is for — not just what to call it — is what lets a writer draft efficiently instead of guessing at structure section by section.

The core body: IMRaD

Most empirical papers in the sciences, social sciences, and biomedicine organize their central argument using IMRaD: Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion, in that order. 1. Title page

The title page carries more than the paper’s title. ICMJE’s own manuscript-preparation guidance places “Sources of Support” — grants, equipment, drugs, or other support that facilitated the work or the writing — on the title page as a distinct element from any free-text acknowledgment of individuals, and is explicit that funding sources and affiliations that did not contribute to the work should not be listed, since doing so would be misleading.
