Editorial commentary

Indigenous community review may be carried out by elders' councils, dedicated community research ethics committees, governance bodies, or other structures designated by the community. The review may parallel or supplement institutional research ethics review and is often a condition of FPIC. It typically considers research design, benefits, risks, alignment with community priorities, and adherence to cultural protocols. The form and authority of the review are determined by the community.
