Examples

Worked examples

  • Is an instance

A grant application cites the journal as 'PRX Quantum, Journal Impact Factor 12.3 (2025, per the APS journal page)', naming both the data year and the source.

  • Is an instance

A reviewer comparing two quantum journals checks each in the same database and the same subject category for the same year, rather than setting a JIF against a CiteScore.

Editorial commentary

Quick answer: PRX Quantum’s Journal Impact Factor is 12.3 and its CiteScore is 19.4, both reported for 2025 on the journal’s own About page at the American Physical Society (journals.aps.org/prxquantum/about), which states that all metrics listed there are from 2025. Source: APS journal page, 2025 metrics, checked 29 October 2026. The two numbers come from different providers and are not interchangeable.

PRX Quantum is a fully open access journal of the American Physical Society (APS) covering quantum information science and technology, ISSN 2691-3399. This entry explains what its impact factor means, which figures the publisher reports, and how far those figures can be pushed when assessing a paper or a journal.

What the impact factor is

The Journal Impact Factor (JIF) is a journal-level ratio published annually by Clarivate in the Journal Citation Reports: the citations received in the data year by items the journal published in the previous two years, divided by the number of those items (Clarivate’s published definition). It describes the journal as a whole, not any single article, and it changes with each annual release, so a figure is only meaningful with its data year attached.

PRX Quantum’s reported value and source

The APS About page for PRX Quantum lists a Journal Impact Factor of 12.3 and states that all metrics on the page are from 2025. When the number is going into a CV, tenure file, grant application or funder report, confirm it against the current Journal Citation Reports release or the journal page and name the data year, because Clarivate issues a new value every year.

Metric Value Year Source

CiteScore 19.4 2025 Same APS page, same date

Impact factor versus CiteScore

The APS page reports a CiteScore of 19.4 next to the impact factor. CiteScore is a journal metric calculated from Scopus data, while the JIF is Clarivate’s and counts citations to items from the previous two years. The two come from different providers and databases and need not match for the same journal. When you cite either, name the provider and the year, and do not set a JIF beside a CiteScore as if they were one scale. The APS page lists Scopus among the services that index the journal.

Open access, licence and article charges

PRX Quantum is fully open access. APS states that articles are published under a CC BY 4.0 licence, that authors retain copyright, and that the journal is funded through article publication charges due once an article is accepted. APS also states that it automatically waives these charges for authors from lower-income countries. The Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) lists the journal, with APS as publisher, a CC BY licence and a maximum article charge of 3,590 USD (DOAJ record last updated 17 September 2026, checked 29 October 2026). The current fee schedule is on the APS charges page linked from the DOAJ record, and it is the authority if the two ever differ.

Using the number responsibly

  • It is a journal figure, not a paper figure. A highly cited journal contains many articles that are cited rarely, and the reverse. Compare the work itself, not the venue.
  • Do not compare across fields. Citation practices differ between quantum science and, for example, the life sciences. Compare a journal with its subject peers, and see the Scientific Reports impact factor entry for how a multidisciplinary mega-journal’s figure is reported.
  • Always state data year and source. The same journal has a different value every year, and a different one again in a different database.
  • Quartile and rank need the subject category. A quartile is a ranking within a named JCR or Scopus subject category for a given year, so check it in the database for the year you need rather than quoting a rank from memory.

A related author-level measure, the h-index, has its own limits and should not be mixed with journal metrics.
