Researcher webpage

The webpage is hosted on the website of the researcher’s employer — for example, a university or institute website — rather than on a third-party platform. There may or may not be a direct connection between this institutional webpage and the same institution’s repository (see Institutional repository), but researchers should generally still ensure their works are deposited in a repository to meet the Open Access requirements of many funders, since the people who maintain a departmental webpage and the people who manage a repository’s long-term preservation and access policy are often different and not necessarily in sync.

Hand-maintained page vs. CRIS-generated profile

This traditional, often hand-authored kind of page is a genuinely different thing from the auto-generated public profile many institutions now also run alongside or in place of it — a Pure Portal profile, an Elements-powered public profile, or a VIVO profile — which is populated directly from the institution’s Person record (CRIS) rather than manually written. The trade-off runs in opposite directions: a CRIS-generated profile stays current automatically as new outputs, affiliations, and grants are entered into the underlying system, but typically has little room for prose — a research-interests narrative, a bio, teaching information, media — that a manually maintained webpage can carry freely and a template-driven profile usually cannot. Many researchers, and many institutions, maintain both rather than choosing one over the other.

A researcher webpage is not itself a persistent identifier or a curated registry record — it is a rendered, human-facing page, distinct from the underlying CRIS data or a registry entry such as a curated org record.
