Editorial commentary

Traditional Knowledge Labels were created to provide Indigenous communities with a mechanism to communicate the cultural rules and provenance associated with their knowledge as it travels through external systems. Labels can convey, for example, attribution expectations, restrictions on commercial use, or culturally sensitive handling requirements. They are applied by communities themselves and can be embedded in metadata accompanying datasets, collections, and publications. Labels are complemented by Biocultural Labels for biocultural data and by Notices used by institutions.
