Editorial commentary
Local Contexts provides tools for Indigenous communities to assert authority over their materials and knowledge as it flows through institutional and digital systems. The framework is grounded in the understanding that knowledge is locally situated and that local communities are best placed to articulate the rules governing it. It is widely referenced in CARE-aligned data practice and supports interoperability with cultural heritage, biodiversity, and research data infrastructures. Local Contexts itself functions as a coordinating concept and supporting platform rather than as a substitute for community authority.
