Adult Diaper Size Chart: Waist and Hip Ranges by Brand

Waist and hip ranges for adult briefs and pull-on underwear from two manufacturer documents, how to measure, and why Medium differs by brand.

An adult diaper size chart converts one body measurement, the widest point between waist and hip, into a size label. The ranges below are copied from two manufacturer documents, not from a standard. Sizes are defined by each maker, so the same label can cover different measurements on a different brand. This page is general product information, not medical advice; a clinician or caregiver should guide any decision about care.

Briefs are the tape-tab style; protective underwear is the pull-on style. Measurements are in inches. All values come from the documents named in the last column, checked on 2026-10-30.

Check your product’s labelling. The chart for the exact product you are considering is the one that applies. Tranquility’s own guide says: “Sizing is not always perfect; the sizes shown are recommendations, not a guarantee.”

How to read the chart

Find the row for the product style, then find the row whose range contains your measurement. Two details matter. First, ranges overlap: in the Tranquility briefs, 44 inches falls in both Medium (32 to 44) and Large (44 to 58), and 58 inches is the top of Large and inside X-Large (56 to 64). Second, the ranges are wide, so a person near the edge of a range is choosing between two sizes, not reading off one correct answer.

How to measure for an adult diaper

Tranquility’s size guide gives the method in one line: use a tape measure to measure, in inches, the widest part of your body between waist and hip, then use that number to determine product size. That is a single measurement, not a waist number alone. The guide also lists weight bands, but the stated basis for choosing a size is the measurement. The related adult incontinence product selection guide makes the same point about sizing by waist and hip rather than by weight.

Is the fit right? The manufacturer’s cues

Tranquility describes a correctly fitted brief as snug, with the tape tabs placed on the hips and no gaps around the legs. For protective underwear it describes a snug fit that touches the crotch with no gaps around the legs.

Why the same size label differs by brand

Comparing the two documents above shows why S/M/L cannot be trusted across brands. Medium is 32 to 44 inches in the Tranquility brief chart but 34 to 47 inches in the TENA Super Briefs listing. Large is 44 to 58 inches in one and 48 to 59 inches in the other. The two sources also measure differently: Tranquility gives a waist/hip range, while the TENA page lists waist sizes only. Each range is that maker’s own, so treat each chart as belonging only to its own product line.

Common mix-ups

  • Using a chart from another brand. A Medium on one chart is not a Medium on another, as shown above.
  • Measuring the waist only. The Tranquility method measures the widest point between waist and hip.
  • Sizing by weight alone. Tranquility lists weight bands beside the measurement ranges, but states the measurement as the basis for size.
  • Mixing styles. Briefs and pull-on underwear have different ranges for the same label, such as Large 44 to 58 versus 44 to 54 at Tranquility.

FAQ

How do I change an adult diaper?

This page does not give changing steps. Follow the instructions printed on the product’s packaging and any guidance from the person’s clinician or care team. For sizing, use the chart above.

What are adult diapers?

The manufacturer documents above describe two common styles: briefs with tape tabs and pull-on protective underwear. Both are sized by body measurement as shown in the chart.

How do I find my adult diaper size?

Measure the widest part of the body between waist and hip with a tape measure, then find that number in the chart for your exact product. If the number sits on an overlap, such as 44 inches in the Tranquility briefs, consult the manufacturer’s fit cues to decide.
