In May 2026, Macromolecular Materials and Engineering (Wiley) retracted a paper on polyvinyl chloride (PVC) biodegradation after its own lead author, then-Princeton sophomore Rishika Porandla, contacted the journal to request it. None of this means self-retraction is consequence-free — a retraction is still a retraction, and it should be. How to Self-Initiate a Retraction or Correction: The Practical Steps
- Confirm the error is real and material before acting. Re-derive the result, re-check the data, or (as in Porandla’s case) re-verify the experimental assumption independently. A false alarm reported to a journal creates its own confusion; be sure first.
- Loop in co-authors and your PI or research-integrity office early. A retraction request from a single author on a multi-author paper is more complicated than one where all authors agree on the facts — journals will typically ask whether co-authors concur, and disagreement among authors can turn a straightforward correction into a drawn-out dispute. Most institutions’ research-integrity or compliance offices can advise on process even when no misconduct is suspected.
- Contact the journal editor directly, in writing, before drafting a fix yourself.
