The NSF CAREER Award (formally the Faculty Early Career Development Program) is the National Science Foundation’s most prestigious award for early-career faculty, funding a five-year, foundation-wide program that integrates research and education. It sits alongside NSF’s other early-career mechanisms — the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) for doctoral students and the NSF Postdoctoral Fellowship for postdocs — as the flagship award for tenure-track faculty, administered foundation-wide across every NSF directorate rather than by a single program office. Unlike a standard NSF research grant, a CAREER proposal must present a single, integrated plan combining research and education, submitted through Research.gov.

Eligibility

To be eligible, a Principal Investigator must, as of the annual deadline: hold a doctoral degree in a field NSF supports; hold at least a 50% tenure-track (or tenure-track-equivalent) position as an assistant professor or equivalent title; be untenured; and not have previously received a CAREER award. Non-tenure-track applicants can still qualify if their institution supplies a Departmental Letter affirming their appointment is equivalent to pre-tenure, early-career status. Proposals may only come from two- and four-year U.S.-accredited institutions of higher education (including community colleges) or eligible U.S.-based nonprofit organizations, submitted on the PI’s behalf.

Submission limits

An eligible PI may submit only one CAREER proposal per annual competition, and no co-PIs are permitted on the proposal. A PI may not participate in more than three CAREER competitions in total — proposals withdrawn before review, or returned without review, don’t count against that limit. There is no limit on how many CAREER proposals an institution may submit in a given year.

What the award funds

A CAREER proposal must describe a single, integrated plan for research and education — not two separate activities bolted together — built around what NSF calls “a lifetime of leadership in integrating education and research.” The education component can target K-12, undergraduate, graduate, or public audiences, as long as it is synergistic with the proposed research rather than a generic teaching add-on. This integration requirement is what most sharply distinguishes CAREER from NSF’s standard investigator-initiated grants, which carry no such requirement and no early-career eligibility restriction at all.

Award size and duration

NSF funds CAREER awards for a five-year duration. The award, including indirect costs, must total a minimum of $400,000 over those five years — or a minimum of $500,000 for proposals to the Directorates for Biological Sciences (BIO) or Engineering (ENG), or the Office of Polar Programs (OPP). NSF estimates roughly 500 CAREER awards per year, for an anticipated aggregate funding amount of about $250 million annually (new and continuing increments combined, subject to availability of funds).

Deadlines

CAREER uses a single annual deadline for every directorate: the fourth Wednesday in July, due by 5:00 p.m. the submitting organization’s local time. The current governing solicitation is NSF 22-586, published April 13, 2022 and last updated by NSF on July 18, 2026.

Presidential recognition

Each year NSF nominates up to 26 of its most meritorious recent CAREER awardees for the Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) — an honor individuals cannot apply for directly. NSF selects the nominees, and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy makes the final award decision.
