ORCID service

ORCID groups affiliation data into seven types under what its own documentation calls “professional activities”: Employment, Education, Qualification, Invited position, Distinction, Membership, and Service. Per ORCID’s integration guide, Service covers “any form of service provided by the researcher as part of their professional activities,” and explicitly names “serving on a society or editorial board, review service, extension work, and more” as examples — ORCID Record documentation.

A service entry carries the same structural fields as every other affiliation item: a required organization name, city, ISO 3166 country code, and disambiguated organization identifier (typically a ROR ID), plus optional role/title, department, URL, start date, and end date — per ORCID’s admin guide to affiliations, which frames service against invited position this way: an invited position is “a formal acknowledgement requiring no specific service,” while service “involves actual contributions of time or resources.” Like any affiliation, a service entry can be self-asserted by the iD holder or asserted by a trusted organization through the ORCID Member API, and its visibility follows the same public / trusted-parties / private permission model as the rest of the record.

Service is the affiliation type most often confused with its two nearest neighbors. Against employment: a paid, ongoing institutional post — even one with governance or committee duties, such as associate dean — is employment, because the researcher is compensated by, and formally employed by, that organization. Against invited position: an honorary title with no ongoing active duties (an emeritus designation, a named visiting fellowship awarded without a working commitment) is an invited position, not service, because it recognizes standing rather than an active, ongoing donation of time. Service sits between the two: unpaid or nominally compensated, but requiring real, ongoing contribution — board seats, editorial boards, grant-review panels, and extension or outreach work are the clearest instances.

This distinction has practical weight beyond ORCID record-keeping. Research-assessment reform efforts — the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) and the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA) — explicitly push institutions to recognize a wider range of scholarly contribution than publication output alone, including peer review and editorial work; CoARA’s working groups have specifically taken up recognizing and rewarding peer review of articles, books, and funding proposals. A well-populated service section gives a CRIS or funder system a structured, machine-readable record of exactly the kind of contribution these reforms ask institutions to credit, rather than leaving it to an unstructured CV line.
