Editorial commentary
PPI is a core requirement of UK health and social-care research funding (NIHR) and is embedded in many international funder requirements. INVOLVE (later integrated into the NIHR Centre for Engagement and Dissemination) established the involvement/engagement/participation distinction underpinning PPI — see the dedicated patient partner entry for that three-way distinction and for what a patient partner specifically contributes; PPI is the funder-level practice and standards framework built on that distinction, not a synonym for it. PPI is integrated across the research cycle: identifying priorities, designing studies, undertaking research, interpreting findings, disseminating, and implementing. The UK Standards for Public Involvement (2019) define six standards: inclusive opportunities, working together, support and learning, governance, communications, and impact.
Each of the six UK Standards for Public Involvement (2019) corresponds to an evaluable practice rather than a slogan: for example ‘governance’ expects public contributors on funding and ethics committees where appropriate, and ‘impact’ expects funders and institutions to report what involvement actually changed, not just that it occurred. NIHR embeds PPI as a funding-application requirement across most of its research programmes; comparable embedding exists in Canada’s Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR) and the US Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) engagement rubric, though the specific mechanism — a mandatory PPI plan section, a funded PPI budget line, or a dedicated review criterion — differs by funder; see the patient partner entry for how PCORI and SPOR embed comparable partnership models directly into funded-research requirements.
