Editorial commentary

PPI is a core requirement of UK health and social-care research funding (NIHR) and is embedded in many international funder requirements. INVOLVE (later integrated into NIHR Centre for Engagement and Dissemination) distinguishes involvement (active partnership), engagement (information sharing and dialogue) and participation (taking part as a research subject). PPI is integrated across the research cycle: identifying priorities, designing studies, undertaking research, interpreting findings, disseminating, and implementing. The UK Standards for Public Involvement (2019) define six standards: inclusive opportunities, working together, support and learning, governance, communications, and impact.
