An N95 respirator is a disposable, tight-fitting face piece that filters out at least 95% of airborne particles, including very small aerosol particles that a cloth or surgical mask is not designed to stop. “N95” is not a brand — it is a filtration class defined and certified by NIOSH (the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health), the U.S. federal agency responsible for testing and approving respiratory protection equipment. A respirator only earns the N95 designation after NIOSH testing confirms it meets that filtration standard and carries the required certification marking; a mask that merely looks like an N95 without that certification is not one.
The problem an N95 solves is exposure to airborne hazards too small for a barrier mask to catch effectively — certain infectious aerosols, some fine particulates, and other very small airborne contaminants. It exists because ordinary masks are built to block larger droplets and splashes, not the sub-micron particle range an N95’s filter media and sealed fit are engineered to address.

Who uses N95 respirators, and why
N95s are used anywhere a person needs protection against small airborne particles and a properly fitted seal actually matters: healthcare workers during aerosol-generating procedures or care of patients on airborne precautions, laboratory and biosafety personnel handling certain infectious agents, and workers in industrial or research settings with fine-particulate exposure. In a research organization specifically, N95s show up wherever airborne-transmissible agents are handled at the bench, in animal facilities with allergen or infectious exposure, or in occupational health programs covering staff who may need respiratory protection as part of their role.
Because an N95 only works if it seals against the wearer’s face, its protection is conditional in a way a loose-fitting mask’s is not: the correct size, a compatible face shape, and (for required occupational use) a documented fit test and medical clearance are all part of what makes it function as intended, not optional extras.
N95 respirator vs. surgical mask: the distinction that actually matters
This is the most commonly confused comparison, and the difference is functional, not cosmetic:
- Surgical mask — a loose-fitting barrier over the nose and mouth. It blocks large droplets and splashes moving outward from the wearer and provides some inward protection from large droplets, but it is not sealed to the face, so unfiltered air can pass around the edges with normal breathing. It is not rated or certified for a filtration efficiency against small airborne particles.
- N95 respirator — a NIOSH-certified filtering facepiece designed to seal against the wearer’s face and filter at least 95% of airborne particles passing through the filter media itself. Achieving that protection depends on the seal, which is why occupational users are fit tested rather than simply issued a size by eye.
In practice: a surgical mask is source control and basic splash protection; an N95 is personal respiratory protection against small airborne particles, and the two are not interchangeable substitutes for each other’s purpose even though both cover the nose and mouth. N95 vs. KN95: a brief note
KN95 is a similar filtering-facepiece respirator class, but it is certified under China’s GB2626 standard rather than the U.S. NIOSH process, and it is tested and regulated by a different authority with different certification requirements. The two standards target broadly comparable filtration performance, but a KN95 is not itself a NIOSH-certified N95, and U.S. occupational respiratory-protection programs that require a NIOSH-approved respirator specifically should confirm which certification a given product actually carries rather than treating the two labels as interchangeable.
Practical relevance for research administration and procurement
For a lab manager, EHS office, or procurement function, an N95 is not just a PPE line item — using one under a mandatory occupational respiratory-protection program brings a set of compliance obligations with it under OSHA’s Respiratory Protection standard (29 CFR 1910.134): a written program, medical evaluation before fit testing, annual fit testing, and training, all before the respirator is issued for required use. Frequently asked questions
Does N95 mean the respirator blocks 95% of viruses specifically?
No. The 95% figure is a filtration-efficiency rating against a standardized test aerosol of small particles, not a claim about any specific pathogen. Overall protection against a given infectious agent also depends on the fit/seal, correct use, and the broader precautions in place, not the filter rating alone.
Can one N95 respirator be reused?
Standard N95s are designed as disposable, single-use devices under routine use, and manufacturer and workplace guidance should govern any reuse decision. This is a workplace/occupational-health-program policy question, not a general rule this page states as fixed.
Is a KN95 an acceptable substitute for an N95 in a required occupational program?
