How many mammal species actually live in a country most biodiversity databases have never fully reconciled? A team of researchers spanning Honduras, Brazil, the United States, Guatemala, and Costa Rica just spent eight years answering that question for Honduras, and the answer is as much about data infrastructure as it is about wildlife.
Published in ZooKeys on August 7, 2026, “Taxonomy, Natural History, and Conservation of the Mammals of Honduras” confirms 227 native mammal species across 146 genera and 42 families, plus three introduced rodent species. The authors flag that as many as 28 additional species may eventually be verified as the record continues to be cleaned up — a reminder that even a national species list is a living document, not a fixed inventory.
A reconciliation project as much as a taxonomy paper
What sets this study apart is the method, not just the headcount. Lead researcher Manfredo A. Turcios-Casco and colleagues critically evaluated more than 300,000 individual records — museum specimens, peer-reviewed publications, technical reports, and unpublished field observations dating back to the 1960s — to build a single, defensible baseline for what mammal taxa are actually documented in the country.
That is a substantial data-curation undertaking in its own right: decades of records collected under different taxonomic standards, in different formats, by different institutions, had to be checked against current nomenclature and cross-referenced for duplication and error before they could be treated as a coherent dataset. It is the kind of unglamorous record-reconciliation work that rarely gets its own headline, even though the resulting baseline is what every subsequent conservation assessment, environmental impact review, or range map for the region will depend on.
Real, multi-institution collaboration
The work draws on the Asociación para la Sostenibilidad e Investigación Científica en Honduras (ASICH), the Universidade Estadual de Santa Cruz in Brazil, Panthera Honduras, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Wildlife Conservation Society, with contributing researchers based in Honduras, Brazil, the United States, Guatemala, and Costa Rica. That spread matters for a national inventory like this one: mammal ranges don’t respect borders, and the historical record for a country like Honduras is scattered across institutions well outside it — a familiar problem for anyone who has tried to assemble a complete picture of a scientific record after the fact rather than at the point of collection.
Where the modern map still has holes
The most striking finding isn’t a new species — it’s an absence. “For some mammals, including squirrels, raccoons and several small rodents, there were no modern distribution maps available,” the researchers report. In other words, for a meaningful slice of Honduras’s mammal fauna, nobody currently knows, in any usable and up-to-date form, where these animals actually live.
That gap is precisely why the review matters beyond taxonomy circles. As the authors put it: “Because conservation begins with knowledge. One of the biggest challenges in biodiversity conservation is that we often want to protect species before we fully understand them.” A conservation plan, a protected-area boundary, or an environmental impact assessment built on an incomplete or outdated species list inherits that gap silently — the review makes the gap visible instead.
Why this is a data story, not just a wildlife story
