Editorial commentary

PID provider is an umbrella term for entities such as Crossref and DataCite (DOI registration agencies), CNRI (Handle System operator), ORCID Inc., ROR (operated jointly by California Digital Library, Crossref, and DataCite), and ARK Name-Assigning Authorities. Providers may also be national bodies running local Handle services, ARK NAANs, or URN:NBN resolvers (notably national libraries). A PID provider’s persistence policy — what happens to the identifier if the organisation ceases operations — is a critical part of its trustworthiness.
