Project ID (RAiD-anchored)

A persistent, machine-actionable identifier for a research project, typically issued under the Research Activity Identifier (RAiD) standard ISO 23527, used to unambiguously identify the project across systems, funders, institutions, and outputs.

Examples

Worked examples

  • Is an instance

A research project is assigned a RAiD URL such as https://raid.org/10.25.1/abc123, used in all project communications and metadata.

  • Is an instance

An institutional CRIS links each active project to its RAiD ID.

Counter-examples

Looks similar, but isn't

  • Not an instance

An internal departmental project number unique only to one institution is not a persistent global project ID.

  • Not an instance

A funder award number (e.g., NIH grant number) refers to the grant, not the broader project activity.

Editorial commentary

Project IDs solve the long-standing problem of disambiguating projects across institutional, funder, and publication systems. RAiD (Research Activity Identifier), formalised as ISO 23527:2024, provides a globally unique ID at the project (not output) level, linking PIs, contributors, institutions, funders, outputs, and grants. Implementation has begun in Australia (RAiD pioneer), New Zealand, and the UK. RAiD IDs are HTTP URIs and resolve to a metadata record. They complement ORCID (for people), ROR (for organisations), and DOIs (for outputs).
