Examples

Worked examples

  • Is an instance

A RAiD minted at project award for a 5-year ARC Discovery Project, with ORCID iDs of CIs added as they join, DataCite DOIs added as outputs are deposited, and a Funder ID added at award.

  • Is an instance

A multi-institution collaboration using one RAiD as the project's stable reference in publications and progress reports.

Counter-examples

Looks similar, but isn't

  • Not an instance

A grant award number from a funder's own database is not a RAiD.

  • Not an instance

A DOI for the final report of a project is an output identifier, not a project-activity identifier.

Editorial commentary

RAiD was developed by the Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and standardised as ISO 23527:2022. It is a Handle-based identifier resolvable under https://raid.org/ and operates as a ‘container’ identifier: rather than identifying an output, it identifies the research activity itself and accumulates pointers to ORCID iDs (participants), ROR IDs (organisations), DOIs (outputs), Crossref Funder/RAiD funding identifiers, and instrument PIDs over time.
