IRIS: Cineca’s Current Research Information System for Italian Universities

IRIS is Cineca’s shared CRIS and institutional-repository platform used across most Italian universities. What it does, who runs it, and how it connects to VQR research evaluation.

IRIS (Institutional Research Information System) is the shared Current Research Information System (CRIS) developed and hosted by Cineca, Italy’s inter-university computing consortium, and used by the large majority of Italian universities and public research institutions to manage their institutional repository and research-output data in one platform. For a research administrator or librarian working with an Italian partner institution, IRIS is the single most important piece of research-information infrastructure to understand: it is where Italian researchers’ publications, projects, and other outputs are recorded, where open-access deposit happens, and where the data feeding Italy’s national research-evaluation exercise ultimately originates.

What IRIS is

IRIS combines two functions that are handled by separate systems at many institutions elsewhere: an institutional repository for open-access full text, and a CRIS for structured, relational research metadata (people, projects, organizational units, funding, and outputs, and the relationships between them). It is built on DSpace-CRIS — Cineca’s extension of the open-source DSpace repository platform that adds CRIS-style entities modeled on the CERIF (Common European Research Information Format) data model. According to a paper on the Italian model of distributed research information presented at the euroCRIS CRIS2016 conference, the current IRIS platform was released in 2014, replacing and merging two earlier Cineca-run systems that Italian universities had previously used separately for repository and research-output reporting.

Who runs it: Cineca

Cineca describes itself as a non-profit consortium jointly owned by Italian universities together with national research institutions and government ministries — the exact member count is described somewhat differently across Cineca’s own materials at different points in time, so treat any single figure as approximate rather than fixed. Cineca is best known internationally for high-performance computing, but it also runs shared administrative and research-information infrastructure on behalf of its member institutions, of which IRIS is one of the largest deployments. Because IRIS is centrally developed and hosted by Cineca rather than licensed and run independently by each university, Italian institutions share a common underlying data model and upgrade path, which is a meaningfully different arrangement from countries where each university separately procures and configures its own CRIS.

Cineca’s own description of IRIS, published via euroCRIS’s introduction to Cineca, states that IRIS is "currently running in 65 Italian Universities and Research Centers." This figure should be read as an order of magnitude rather than a precise, current headcount: other Cineca- and university-sourced figures from the mid-2010s put the number of live IRIS installations in the low-to-mid 60s at that time, and the exact count naturally shifts slightly as institutions join, merge, or (rarely) migrate away. What is well established, and more important for a research administrator than the exact figure, is that IRIS is the dominant shared CRIS/repository platform in the Italian higher-education and public-research sector — used by most, not a small minority, of Italy’s universities and a number of national research bodies, rather than being one option among several competing platforms as in many other countries.

What IRIS actually does

For a researcher, IRIS is usually the system they log into to self-deposit a new publication, attach the accepted manuscript or published version for open-access compliance, and link that output to a funded project or organizational unit. For a research office or library, IRIS is where:

  • Bibliographic and output metadata is collected and curated — publications, but also (depending on institutional configuration) datasets, patents, conference contributions, and other research products.
  • Open-access deposit and embargo management happens, since the repository side of IRIS is the mechanism by which Italian researchers satisfy funder and institutional open-access mandates.
  • Researcher and organizational profiles are maintained, connecting outputs to specific people, departments, and projects using the CERIF relational model rather than treating each output as a standalone record.
  • Data is aggregated for national reporting, most notably feeding Italy’s national research-assessment exercise.

IRIS and Italy’s national research evaluation (VQR/ANVUR)

Italy’s research-assessment exercise, the VQR (Valutazione della Qualità della Ricerca — "Evaluation of Research Quality"), is run by ANVUR (Agenzia Nazionale di Valutazione del Sistema Universitario e della Ricerca), the national agency responsible for evaluating Italian universities and public research bodies. IRIS repositories are built to be interoperable with the ministry-level infrastructure that ANVUR draws on for VQR reporting cycles, which is a large part of why Italian institutions treat accurate, timely IRIS records as a compliance task and not just a library service. ANVUR has also required an ORCID iD as the standard researcher identifier for VQR submissions, which is one reason ORCID linkage is built into IRIS researcher profiles.
