Examples

Worked examples

  • Is an instance

At month 50 of a 48-month project, the consortium completes archive-phase activities: depositing datasets in Zenodo, assigning DOIs, and lodging records with the institutional archive.

  • Is an instance

An NIH grantee completes the archive phase by depositing final datasets and documentation in the appropriate repository.

Counter-examples

Looks similar, but isn't

  • Not an instance

Active execution of research is not archive.

  • Not an instance

Closeout-period financial reporting is not archive.

Editorial commentary

The archive phase formalises long-term stewardship of project outputs after closeout reporting is complete. Activities include data deposit (in domain repositories, institutional repositories, or FAIR data services), code deposit (Zenodo, GitHub long-lived branches), final document preservation (institutional records system), and dataset registration with DOI. Funder data-sharing policies (NIH DMS Policy, Horizon Europe Open Research Data) set baseline expectations. Embedded compliance with retention periods (e.g., 7 to 10 years post-project for many sponsors) is enforced through archival.
