Examples

Worked examples

  • Is an instance

A project team holds a formal hand-off meeting from execution to closeout, with checklist sign-off by the PI and research-administrator.

  • Is an instance

A postdoc leaving the project documents her data, code, and ongoing experiments in a hand-off pack for her replacement.

Counter-examples

Looks similar, but isn't

  • Not an instance

Routine inter-team email exchanges without structured transfer are not formal hand-offs.

  • Not an instance

A single-team transition with no role change is not a hand-off.

Editorial commentary

Hand-offs occur at multiple points: proposal team to award-negotiation team, award-negotiation team to execution team, execution team to closeout team, original team to archive team, and at personnel transitions (e.g., outgoing postdoc to incoming postdoc). Quality hand-off practice includes written briefing documents, joint meetings, version-controlled project records, and clear ownership transfer. Poor hand-offs are a leading cause of lost institutional memory and downstream compliance issues.
