Editorial commentary
Project-phase models in research adapt classical project-management lifecycle frameworks (initiation, planning, execution, monitoring, closeout) to the realities of research, where exploratory phases, pivoting, and uncertainty are routine. Common research-project phases include idea, proposal, award, execution, reporting, closeout, and archive. Each phase has characteristic governance (e.g., proposal approval, kick-off meeting, periodic review, final review). Phase-based planning supports milestone tracking, resource allocation, and risk management.
