Editorial commentary

Mid-term reviews are common in long-duration awards (3-year or longer projects). They serve a dual function: assurance to the sponsor that the project is on track and a structured pause for the team to assess and adjust. Many funders make mid-term review a condition for continuation of funding. Outputs may include a written panel report with recommendations, agreed changes to the work plan, or (in unusual cases) a stop-or-restructure decision. ERC mid-term reviews are publicly summarised on the ERC website.
