Editorial commentary
The execution phase is typically the longest by duration and the most resource-intensive. It encompasses experiment design and execution, fieldwork or clinical recruitment, data collection and analysis, software development, prototype building, dissemination activities, and ongoing project-management routines (consortium meetings, work-package coordination, risk reviews). Within the execution phase, periodic checkpoints (interim reviews, milestone gates, deliverable submissions) provide governance. Most reporting activity overlaps with execution rather than being separate.
