Parachute science, also called helicopter research or neo-colonial science, describes a pattern in which researchers based in well-resourced institutions travel to a lower-resourced country, ecosystem, or community, collect data or samples, and leave without meaningfully involving local researchers, communities, or institutions in the design, interpretation, or authorship of the resulting work. The term is used across field-based disciplines — ecology, marine science, public health, anthropology, and global health research — but the underlying problem is the same in every field: local expertise and labor are used, but local credit and capacity-building are not.

The people who arranged site access, obtained local permits, collected data under local conditions, and often contributed essential contextual and methodological knowledge are frequently omitted from authorship altogether, or relegated to middle-author positions that carry little weight in hiring, promotion, and funding decisions — even when their contribution would satisfy ICMJE’s authorship criteria or map cleanly onto several CRediT roles such as Investigation, Resources, or Data Curation.
What Makes Research “Parachute Science”
There is no single formal definition, but the research-ethics literature converges on a consistent set of markers. A project is generally described as parachute or helicopter research when most or all of the following are true:
- Researchers from an outside institution design the study with little or no input from local scientists, community leaders, or institutions before fieldwork begins.
- Local researchers, field staff, or community members provide site access, logistical support, translation, or on-the-ground data collection, but are not offered co-authorship commensurate with that contribution.
- Samples, data, or specimens are exported for analysis elsewhere, with no local capacity left behind and no data or benefit sharing arrangement.
- Publication and dissemination happen in outlets, languages, or venues the source community cannot access, and findings are rarely reported back to the communities studied.
- The relationship is transactional and short-term rather than an ongoing partnership that builds local research capacity.
Why It’s Also Called Helicopter Research
The metaphor is literal: researchers arrive quickly, extract what they came for, and leave before any lasting local benefit or relationship can develop. Some literature also uses “neo-colonial science” or “extractive research” to name the same pattern and to make explicit that it echoes older colonial patterns of resource extraction — only the resource being extracted is data, biological samples, or traditional/local knowledge rather than raw materials.
The Authorship Equity Problem
Within the credit-authorship literature, parachute science is usually discussed as a specific, well-documented failure mode of author-order and byline practices. Studies of global health and field-science publications have repeatedly found that local co-investigators are disproportionately placed in middle-author positions rather than first- or last-author positions, even when they meet standard authorship criteria. Because first and last author positions carry outsized weight in tenure, grant, and hiring evaluations in most academic systems, this pattern compounds over a career: researchers from under-resourced institutions accumulate a publication record that looks thinner in exactly the positions that matter most for advancement, regardless of the substance of their actual contribution.

How Journals and Funders Are Responding
Since roughly 2020, a number of publishers and scholarly societies have introduced explicit policies aimed at this pattern, usually framed around inclusion of local researchers and reporting on the geographic origin of research:
- PLOS Medicine introduced an inclusivity-in-global-research policy requiring authors of research conducted in a country other than the authors’ own to complete a questionnaire addressing local co-authorship, data and material sharing, and community benefit, and it has stated an expectation that local researchers be represented in first or last author positions where warranted by their contribution.
- eLife has adopted an author policy specifically addressing parachute science, asking authors of field-based studies to describe the role local researchers played and how the collaboration was structured.
- AGU (American Geophysical Union) introduced a policy requiring authors to disclose whether local researchers were involved in study design, execution, and authorship, applying it across its journal portfolio.
- Nature Geoscience and other journals in field-based earth and environmental sciences have published editorials committing to similar disclosure and inclusion expectations.

What Genuine Collaboration Looks Like
The corrective most consistently recommended in this literature is not simply “add a local co-author” as a compliance step, but a shift in how the research relationship is structured from the outset:
- Co-design, not just co-execution. Local researchers and, where relevant, community representatives are involved in framing the research question and study design, not brought in only to collect data.
- Authorship reflecting actual contribution. Author order and any CRediT contribution statement should map to what each person actually did, evaluated against the same criteria — such as the ICMJE four authorship criteria — applied to every other author, not adjusted downward for local researchers by default.
- Capacity building and data/material access. Analysis capability, equipment, or training is left behind, or local researchers retain meaningful access to the data and samples generated, rather than everything being exported for analysis elsewhere.
- Community consent and benefit-sharing. Community leaders and, for research involving Indigenous data or knowledge, applicable data-governance frameworks (such as the CARE Principles for Indigenous Data Governance — Collective Benefit, Authority to Control, Responsibility, and Ethics, from the Global Indigenous Data Alliance) are consulted on how findings and any downstream benefits are shared.
- Reporting back. Findings are communicated to the community or country studied, ideally in an accessible language and venue, not only in a paywalled journal in the researchers’ home institution’s language.
Parachute Science vs. Other Authorship-Equity Problems
Parachute science overlaps with, but is distinct from, several adjacent concepts in the credit-authorship literature:
- It is not the same as ghost authorship, where a contributor (often a professional medical writer) is omitted entirely from the byline despite substantial writing contribution.
- It is not the same as gift authorship, where someone is credited despite not meeting authorship criteria at all, typically for seniority or reciprocity reasons.
- It is related to, but broader than, an ordinary authorship dispute: parachute science describes a structural pattern across a research relationship or field, not a single disagreement over one paper’s byline.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is parachute science only a problem in field sciences like ecology and marine biology?
No. It is documented across field ecology, earth and environmental science, anthropology, and especially global health research, where clinical trials, epidemiological studies, and public health interventions conducted in lower- and middle-income countries have shown the same pattern of local under-authorship. Any research that depends on a location, community, or population that the lead researchers are not themselves part of carries some risk of this dynamic.
Does adding a local researcher as a middle author solve the problem?
