Editorial commentary

The award phase begins with the funder's funding decision (positive) and ends with the official project start date. Activities include reviewing the offer letter or notice of award, negotiating any conditions (often around budget reductions, scope adjustments), executing the Grant Agreement or signing the Notice of Award, securing pending compliance approvals (ethics, biosafety, animal welfare), hiring or transferring key personnel, setting up project accounts in the financial system, and holding a kick-off meeting. The phase varies from days (for small awards) to many months (for complex international consortia).
