Coverage and scope

Digital Science launched Dimensions publicly on 30 January 2018, built by combining data and technology from six of its own portfolio companies — Altmetric, Figshare, IFI Claims (patents), Symplectic (institutional research-information systems), ReadCube (full-text indexing), and ÜberResearch (grants intelligence) — into one linked platform. At launch, Dimensions reported connecting roughly 124 million documents, including citation data across 86 million articles; by early 2018 press coverage, it also indexed on the order of four million grants, 400,000 clinical trials, and 35 million patents.

Per Digital Science’s own current product page, Dimensions now indexes more than 165 million publications, 8.2 million grants (representing over $2.7 trillion in tracked research funding), 184 million patents, 74.8 million datasets, 1.2 million clinical trials, 2.6 million policy documents, and 41 million researcher profiles. As with any provider-reported figure, these totals grow continuously and should be checked against Digital Science’s current page rather than treated as fixed.

Dimensions’ patent data is sourced from IFI Claims, itself a Digital Science company that aggregates filings from patent offices worldwide. Its policy-document coverage draws on sources such as WHO, World Bank, and national/intergovernmental policy repositories — letting a research office trace, in principle, whether a piece of funded research was later cited in a policy document, not only in a subsequent academic paper.

Who publishes Dimensions

Dimensions is owned and operated by Digital Science & Research Solutions Ltd, a technology company that also owns Symplectic Elements, Figshare, Altmetric, and IFI Claims. Digital Science is itself a subsidiary of the Holtzbrinck Publishing Group — the same German family-owned holding company that is the majority shareholder of Springer Nature, though Digital Science and Springer Nature operate independently of one another. This matters for a research office evaluating Dimensions alongside Scopus (Elsevier) and Web of Science (Clarivate): all three sit inside large information-industry corporate groups, but Digital Science’s parent (Holtzbrinck) is distinct from Elsevier’s parent (RELX) and from Clarivate, which is publicly traded and unaffiliated with either.

Dimensions also has a direct lineage into CASRAI-relevant identifier infrastructure: before 2021, Dimensions used GRID (the Global Research Identifier Database), a free institutional-identifier registry Digital Science itself curated, to disambiguate organisations. When GRID was frozen and donated as the seed dataset for the community-governed ROR (Research Organization Registry) in 2021, Dimensions transitioned its own institution matching to ROR IDs alongside the rest of the sector.

Access model: Dimensions Free vs. Dimensions Analytics

Dimensions is available on a genuine freemium model, not solely as an institutional subscription. The free tier (at app.dimensions.ai) requires only account registration and provides full-text search across the publications and datasets index, basic citation counts, Altmetric Attention Scores, and the ability to link records to a researcher’s own ORCID iD — a meaningfully more open starting point than Scopus or Web of Science, neither of which offers any free full-database search. Grants, patents, clinical trials, and policy-document data, along with the advanced filtering, benchmarking, and export tools built for institutional analytics, sit behind the paid Dimensions Analytics subscription, licensed per institution.

Dimensions compared to Scopus, Web of Science, and OpenAlex

Dimensions is frequently evaluated alongside the other major bibliographic databases a research office already uses.   • Selection model — Scopus and Web of Science apply curated, title-by-title editorial review; Dimensions and OpenAlex both take a more inclusive, largely automated ingestion approach, though they draw on different underlying source infrastructure.
  • Grants and funding data — this is Dimensions’ clearest differentiator. Scopus and Web of Science are citation indexes with no native grants database; OpenAlex records a Funder entity type but does not match Dimensions’ depth of direct funder-data integrations. Dimensions was built, from launch, specifically to link grants to the outputs they produced.
  • Cost — Dimensions’ free tier covers publication search and basic metrics, similar in spirit to OpenAlex’s fully free model, but Dimensions’ grants/patents/clinical-trials data and analytics tooling require a paid subscription, unlike OpenAlex’s CC0-licensed full dataset.

Role in research administration

Dimensions’ funding-to-output linkage is what most directly serves research-administration use cases that Scopus and Web of Science are not built for:

  • Grant-to-publication impact tracking. A research office or funder can query Dimensions for a specific award or funder and retrieve every publication, patent, or clinical trial Dimensions has linked back to it — via direct funder-data integrations, acknowledgment-text mining of full papers, or inferred linkage — without manually cross-referencing a grants database against a citation index. This is the same underlying need that a funder-specific system like the UK’s Gateway to Research serves for UKRI awards specifically; Dimensions performs an analogous function across many funders and countries at once.
  • Funder and institutional reporting. Because Dimensions carries grant amount, funder, and duration alongside linked outputs, it supports funding-landscape and portfolio-analysis reporting (e.g., “what has this funder’s investment in a topic area produced”) that a pure citation index cannot answer on its own.
  • CRIS integration. Dimensions data is commonly ingested into current research information systems (CRIS) — including Symplectic Elements and Pure, both fellow Digital Science- or Elsevier-owned products with their own harvesting integrations — to populate institutional publication lists, grant portfolios, and impact dashboards alongside data sourced from Scopus, Web of Science, or Crossref.
  • Commercialisation and translational-impact evidence. Because patent data (via IFI Claims) is linked in the same graph as publications and grants, a technology-transfer or research-impact office can trace whether federally or philanthropically funded research was later cited as prior art in a patent, supporting REF-style impact case studies or funder translational-impact reporting.

How is Dimensions different from Scopus and Web of Science?
