Google Scholar Metrics

Google Scholar Metrics is a free tool built into Google Scholar that ranks publication venues -- journals, conference proceedings, and some preprint repositories -- by an automatically-computed h5-index, rather than ranking individual authors. A source counts as covered by Google Scholar Metrics only once it clears fixed inclusion thresholds (at minimum roughly 100 articles published within the most recent five complete calendar years, with at least some citations to those articles); anything below that threshold simply does not appear, regardless of quality. It is a venue-level ranking feature, not an author-level metric -- it should never be confused with an individual researcher's h-index or i10-index, which Google Scholar computes separately inside a personal Google Scholar Citations profile.

Google Scholar Metrics is the venue-ranking feature built into Google Scholar: a free, publicly browsable tool that ranks journals, conference proceedings, and some preprint repositories against one another by a metric called the h5-index. It is entirely distinct from Google Scholar’s author-level metrics — the h-index and i10-index shown on an individual’s Google Scholar Citations profile — which score a single researcher’s body of work, not a publication venue.

How the h5-index is calculated

The h5-index for a given publication venue is the largest number h such that at least h articles published by that venue in the most recent five complete calendar years have each been cited at least h times. Two supporting figures are shown alongside it: the h5-median, the median citation count among the articles that make up the h5-index (a rough indicator of how evenly citations are distributed across the venue’s top output, rather than driven by one or two outlier papers), and the h5-core, the actual set of top-cited articles the h5-index is calculated from — Google Scholar Metrics lets you click through to see that underlying article list and each article’s citation count, rather than only showing the final number.

Because the calculation always uses a rolling five-year window, it re-derives automatically each year rather than needing a manual annual release — a mechanical difference from citation-indicator products that publish on a fixed annual cycle.

What gets ranked, and what doesn’t

Google Scholar Metrics only covers a venue once it clears fixed inclusion criteria: publications need to have published at least roughly 100 articles within the five-year window being measured, and at least some of those articles need to have been cited. Coverage is mostly journal articles, plus a limited set of conference publications from computer science and electrical engineering, and some preprint repositories; patents, dissertations, court opinions, and smaller or newer venues that haven’t yet cleared the article-count threshold are excluded outright, independent of their actual quality. Within the tool, publications are organized into broad subject categories (with narrower sub-categories inside each) and are also directly searchable by title or abbreviation, so a specific journal’s ranking can be looked up without browsing a category list.

Worked examples

  • Category browsing. A researcher choosing between journals in a subfield can open Google Scholar Metrics, drill into the relevant subject category, and see venues in that category ranked by h5-index with h5-median shown alongside — a quick, no-login comparison of venue standing that doesn’t require a subscription database.

Counter-example

How it differs from author-level metrics and other journal rankings

Google Scholar Metrics is easy to conflate with two different kinds of tool, and the distinctions matter for how each should actually be used:

  • vs. h-index / i10-index. The h-index and i10-index that appear on a Google Scholar Citations profile are computed for a single author’s entire publication record. Google Scholar Metrics computes an analogous h-style statistic, but for a venue’s aggregate output over a fixed recent window — an author-level metric and a venue-level metric that happen to share the same underlying h-index construction, not the same thing measured twice.
  • vs. Journal Impact Factor and CiteScore. Google Scholar Metrics is a free, automatically-updated alternative to subscription journal-ranking products such as Clarivate’s Journal Impact Factor (from Journal Citation Reports) and Elsevier’s CiteScore (from Scopus). Why it matters for research administration

Google Scholar Metrics is sometimes cited informally in tenure, promotion, or grant-reporting narratives as evidence of a journal’s standing, precisely because it’s free and requires no subscription to check. Research administrators reviewing such narratives should keep in mind the coverage gap above (newer and smaller venues are invisible to it regardless of quality) and the general caution that applies to any single citation-based venue metric: it reflects citation volume within a fixed recent window, not a full picture of a journal’s editorial standards, scope fit, or field-specific citation norms. Responsible-assessment frameworks such as the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) caution against leaning on any single journal-level metric, including h5-index, as a proxy for the quality of an individual article or researcher.
