Hope Medical Center closed: the emergency rooms open in Humacao today

Hope Medical Center (formerly HIMA Humacao) on Calle Font Martelo closed on December 3, 2025, and as of April 2026 there was no plan to reopen, according to local press. Some directories, and even federal hospital data, still list its ER: do not go there.

  • Hospital Ryder Memorial: 355 Ave Font Martelo, Humacao, PR 00791. Phone 787-852-0768. 24/7 ER; we could not confirm a pediatric ER.
  • Hospital Menonita Humacao (formerly Hospital Oriente): 300 Ave Font Martelo, Humacao, PR 00792. Phone 787-852-0505. ER for adults and children. After Hope closed, it was licensed for 12 more beds.

Urgent care in Humacao: Salus Boulevard del Río is not 24 hours

Salus Urgent Care Humacao, Boulevard del Río, 787-656-2727. Hours: Monday 8 a.m.–8 p.m.; Tuesday–Sunday 8 a.m.–6 p.m. It is an urgent care center, not a hospital ER, and most days it closes at 6.

After that, the verified options are Ryder, Menonita Humacao or 911. If you are unsure what you need, read where to go when you are sick.

Nearest 24-hour pharmacy to Humacao: Caguas

No pharmacy counter in Humacao is open 24 hours. Only five in all of Puerto Rico are, all Walgreens (Guaynabo, Bayamón, Caguas, Cayey and Ponce). The two closest to Humacao, with the Walgreens locator distance (not a drive time):

Both counters close 1:30–2 a.m. for a meal break. If you get a prescription in the afternoon, fill it in town before the local pharmacy counters close, and call first: hours change.

Power cuts and hurricanes: Ryder on generators, and María's storm surge

On July 15, 2026, Hospital Ryder lost grid power and ran on generators for more than seven days, Metro reported. For Humacao residents it is a reminder that a long outage affects your health at home too.

Hurricane María made landfall near Yabucoa on September 20, 2017. The National Hurricane Center measured a 6–9 ft storm surge on the Humacao, Naguabo and Ceiba coasts, 5.1 ft of water inside buildings at Punta Santiago, and a pressure of 929.4 mb at Palmas del Mar.

Keep a written list of your medications and doses, a few weeks' supply, and a plan for anything that needs refrigeration. The FDA says that in an emergency insulin can be kept unrefrigerated, between 59 °F and 86 °F, for up to 28 days. If you run a generator, keep it outside: the CDC warns about carbon monoxide. Dengue in Humacao: 41 cases and 82.6 per 100,000

According to the Puerto Rico Department of Health's weekly report for week 37 (published September 23, 2026), Humacao reported 41 dengue cases in weeks 1–37 of 2026, a rate of 82.6 per 100,000 residents; by case count it ties San Juan despite a fraction of the population.
