Many problems can be diagnosed from your symptoms and what the doctor sees on camera. When a test would help decide the treatment, she gives you a lab order for a lab near you. For example:

• UTI: a urinalysis or urine culture, especially for young children or when infections keep coming back.
• A fever or diarrhea that isn't improving: blood work or other tests the doctor considers necessary.

Once you have the results, you go over them with her in a follow-up visit. The doctor never promises an antibiotic: antibiotics don't work on viruses, which cause most colds and many sore throats. If appropriate, the doctor prescribes and we send your prescription to your pharmacy.

• A serious injury, a bone that looks broken or bleeding that won't stop.
• Sudden severe belly pain, vomiting that keeps you from holding down fluids, or signs of dehydration.
• A fever in a baby under 3 months old.
• With dengue or suspected dengue: belly pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding gums or nosebleeds, or unusual tiredness or irritability.
