Lab orders online in Puerto Rico, plus results review

You can get a lab order online in Puerto Rico after a video visit, when the doctor considers testing appropriate for you. You take the order to any clinical lab you choose in Puerto Rico and pay the lab directly for the tests. You can then go over the results with the doctor in a follow-up video visit. We never issue lab orders without a visit.

When a lab order makes sense

The doctor decides whether you need a test after she has evaluated you, not before. Common examples:

Follow-up of a stable condition such as type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol or hypothyroidism. The CDC notes that most people with diabetes have an A1C test at least twice a year.
Confirming or ruling out something your symptoms suggest, when a test would change the treatment.
Routine tests the doctor considers appropriate for your age and history, after evaluating you.
Monitoring a long-term medication that calls for it.

How a lab order online works in Puerto Rico

Request a visit online 24/7 — we confirm your time by email or text. Then:

On the video call, the doctor evaluates you and decides whether a lab test is appropriate.
If it is, she gives you the order and explains how you will receive it and whether you need to fast.
You go to the clinical lab of your choice and pay for the tests there.
Once you have the results, you can request a follow-up visit to review them. Have the results with you on the call, on paper or on your phone.

Where to get tested

Anywhere you like. We have no agreements, partnerships or electronic connection with any lab, and we take no money from labs, so we don't steer you to one. Any clinical lab in Puerto Rico that accepts the order will do, whether you are in San Juan, Dorado, Rincón or Ponce.

Because there is no connection to any lab, your results don't reach us automatically. Ask the lab for your results and bring them to the follow-up visit.

Call the lab before you go to check hours, whether you need an appointment, what the tests cost and, if you want to use insurance, whether they accept your plan with this order.

What's not included

So there are no surprises:

The cost of the tests. The US$79 visit includes the order if the doctor considers it appropriate, but the lab charges separately. We don't bill insurance; using your plan for the tests is between you, your plan and the lab.
Reviewing results. That happens in a follow-up visit, at the same US$79. See pricing.
Tests for the Puerto Rico health certificate (certificado de salud). It requires a tuberculin skin test, placed by a doctor the Department of Health has authorized or their staff, and a syphilis blood test (VDRL); only that authorized doctor issues the certificate, at the authorized location. Urine tests for young children, which need an in-person visit. See child doctor visits.
Orders without a visit. We don't sell stand-alone lab orders; there is always a medical evaluation first.

Labs for chronic conditions

If you have diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or a thyroid condition, labs are part of your follow-up. See chronic care by telehealth and prescription refills: sometimes the doctor needs recent results before renewing a medication.

Before you book

You must be physically in Puerto Rico during the visit (visitors and tourists are welcome).
We see patients from 6 months old. Patients under 21: a parent or legal guardian must be on camera for the whole visit.
Real-time video only; we do not do phone-call visits.
We do not prescribe controlled substances.
