If you need a doctor in Caguas, know that it has Puerto Rico's highest dengue count in 2026, two hospital ERs and one of the island's five 24-hour pharmacy counters, on PR-1. Dengue in Caguas: 118 cases in 2026, the highest count in Puerto Rico

The Puerto Rico Department of Health's weekly arboviral report for week 37 (published September 23, 2026) counts 118 dengue cases in Caguas for weeks 1–37 of 2026. That is 12.8% of the island's 922 cases and more than any other municipio. Its rate, 94.68 per 100,000 residents, is the fifth highest, and the Caguas health region totals 313 cases. The report does not say why Caguas is so high, and we won't guess.

Island-wide, almost half of 2026 cases (49.5%) were hospitalized, so it pays to know the warning signs. The CDC says they usually start 24 to 48 hours after the fever breaks:

  • Belly pain or tenderness
  • Vomiting at least 3 times in 24 hours
  • Bleeding from the nose or gums
  • Vomiting blood, or blood in the stool
  • Feeling extremely tired, restless or irritable

Any of these means the ER, not a video call. A fever with body aches and no warning signs can be assessed by video, and the doctor will tell you whether you need labs or an in-person visit. See our dengue guide.

Emergency rooms in Caguas: Pavía Caguas (formerly HIMA) and Menonita Caguas

In an emergency call 911. These are the two hospital ERs we verified in Caguas. Neither is affiliated with us.

  • Hospital Pavía Caguas (formerly HIMA San Pablo Caguas; run by Metro Pavia since December 20, 2023): 100 Ave Luis Muñoz Marín, Urb. Mariolga, Caguas, PR 00725. Metro Pavia lists a 24/7 ER for adults and children. Phone unconfirmed: the hospital page gives 787-653-3434 and Metro Pavia's ER list gives 656-3434; in an emergency, 911 does not depend on either.
  • Hospital Menonita Caguas (formerly San Juan Bautista Medical Center): Route 172, Exit 21, Urb. Turabo Gardens, Caguas, PR 00726. Phone 787-653-0550. It has separate adult and pediatric ERs; its website does not state 24-hour hours. In June 2024, Noticel reported a family's complaint that a 91-year-old patient waited on a hallway stretcher with more than 40 patients waiting.

Urgent care in Caguas: Salus at Plaza del Carmen closes at 9 p.m.

Salus Urgent Care Caguas, Plaza del Carmen Mall, Suite 24, 787-286-6060. Open daily 7 a.m.–9 p.m. It is an urgent care center, not a hospital ER, and it is closed overnight.

We could not verify any other urgent care center or CDT in Caguas with late hours, so we list none. If you are unsure whether you need urgent care, an ER or a video visit, read where to go when you are sick.

Where is the 24-hour pharmacy in Caguas?

Caguas has one of only five 24-hour pharmacy counters in Puerto Rico, all Walgreens (the others are in Guaynabo, Bayamón, Cayey and Ponce):

  • Walgreens, 101 Carr 1, Caguas, PR 00725, 787-744-2905. Store and pharmacy open 24 hours; the counter closes 1:30–2 a.m. for a meal break.
  • Walgreens, 5800 Ave Jesús T. Piñero, Cayey, 787-263-5166: the region's other 24-hour counter, with the same break.
  • Farmacia Caridad Plaza del Carmen, 787-743-1273: pharmacy Mon–Sat 7 a.m.–9 p.m., Sun 9 a.m.–8 p.m.
  • Farmacia Caridad Ave Degetau, 191 Calle Gautier Benítez, 787-703-3081: pharmacy Mon–Fri 7 a.m.–8 p.m., Sat 9 a.m.–6 p.m., Sun 10 a.m.–6 p.m.

The PR-1 counter also serves people in Humacao and Trujillo Alto and Canóvanas, which have none of their own. In the south, the only 24-hour counter is in Ponce. Hours change, so call first.

Rain and flooding: 37.90 inches in Hurricane María

During Hurricane María in 2017, a Caguas rain gauge recorded 37.90 inches, the highest total anywhere on the island, according to the National Hurricane Center's report. If you live in a flood-prone area, keep your regular medications and a written list of prescriptions up high in a waterproof bag, and refill before a storm arrives. The Department of Health's week 37 report for 2026 gives the number, 118 cases, but not the cause, and we won't speculate. What helps: empty standing water, use repellent, and go to an ER if warning signs appear.
