Editorial and medical review policy

Our health pages are written by The Health Initiative from official sources such as the CDC, MedlinePlus, the FDA, the Puerto Rico Department of Health and Puerto Rico law. A page shows "Medically reviewed by Dr. Diana Nieves Castro, MD" only when she has reviewed it; otherwise we say so. We use artificial intelligence to help draft, and we correct mistakes people point out.
Who writes and who reviews
The author of these pages is The Health Initiative. Dr. Diana Nieves Castro, MD, a general practice physician licensed in Puerto Rico, reviews the clinical content.
Each page shows its status. If the doctor reviewed it, you will see "Medically reviewed by" with the review date. If she has not reviewed it yet, you will see "Author: The Health Initiative" and a note that medical care is provided by the doctor, which is true of the visits, but does not mean she has reviewed that page. We never show a review that did not happen.
Use of artificial intelligence
We use artificial intelligence tools to help research and draft. Every draft is checked against primary sources and goes through the automatic checks described below. Artificial intelligence does not see patients or make clinical decisions: in a visit, every decision is made by the doctor.
Sources
We use primary sources: the CDC, MedlinePlus and the NIH, the FDA, the American Academy of Pediatrics (HealthyChildren.org), NICE, the Puerto Rico Department of Health, Puerto Rico laws and regulations (LexJuris and the Department of Health) and the MMWR. Each page lists them in its sources section, with the date we consulted them.
Statistics and claims
We publish a statistic only if the page cites a source for it. We do not publish testimonials, ratings or patient counts. We do not use brand-name drugs in titles or FAQ questions.
Automatic checks
Before any change is published, a program checks every page and blocks publication if it finds a problem: claims about our service that are not true (such as promising visits at any hour or immediately, or saying that the doctor is a pediatric specialist), broken links between pages, or missing required fields.
Separation from CASRAI
The Health Initiative also manages CASRAI, a research-administration standards programme. The clinical content on these pages is written separately: it does not go through CASRAI's automated publishing processes, and those processes do not automatically link CASRAI's research pages to our health pages. These pages also load no analytics or advertising tools. See about us.
No advertising or sponsorship
These pages carry no advertising or sponsored content, and we take no payments from drug makers or other companies for what we write.
Updates and corrections
We review pages when clinical guidance, the law or our service changes, and we show the date of the last update when we have it. If you find a mistake, email [email protected]. We will look into it and correct it if needed.
