Wellness retreat with a health condition: talk to us first

Having a diagnosis or taking medication does not rule you out of the retreat, but it is a good reason to talk to us before you apply. Pregnancy, recent surgery, a condition that is not stable and complex medication regimens call for a conversation first. The application asks about your health history and Dra. Diana Nieves Castro, MD, reviews it. The retreat is not treatment for any condition and does not replace your own doctor.

The short answer

Many people who wonder whether they can attend a retreat have a diagnosis, take medication every day, or are recovering from something. That is a reasonable question, and we would rather you ask it before you travel than after.

Our answer is this: having a health condition does not rule you out, and it does not mean you should simply apply, either. In some situations a conversation with us first lets us plan your week safely, and sometimes decide with you that this is not the right time. This page explains which situations those are and how that conversation works.

This guide covers medical suitability only. If you are asking whether the pace, the group and the setting fit your lifestyle, see is a wellness retreat right for you?.

What the retreat is, and why it matters for this question

The retreat is a planned break, in person and in a small group, with mobility, meditation and breathwork and nutrition sessions and an assessment with a physician. It is held at a hacienda in Río Grande, Puerto Rico, for 5 days starting November 15, 2026, and the group has 10 places.

It matters here because of what it is not. It is not medical treatment for any condition, it does not replace your primary care doctor or your specialists, it is not rehab or physical therapy, and it is not mental health care. Your own doctor stays in charge of your care. What it does have is a physician on the team: Dra. Diana Nieves Castro, MD, a general practitioner licensed in Puerto Rico, does an assessment and may order labs when they are clinically appropriate.

So the useful question is not "will this fix something?" (it does not promise that), but "is it safe and reasonable for me to spend these days in this program?" That is what we review with you.

Talk to us first if

This is not a list of people who cannot come. These are situations that deserve a conversation before you apply, so that the doctor and you can plan with the full picture. Before you apply, call or write to us if:

  • You are pregnant, or think you might be.
  • You had surgery recently, even if you have been discharged and feel well.
  • You have a condition that is not stable or that changed recently: new symptoms, a recent diagnosis, or a treatment your doctor is still adjusting.
  • You were in the hospital recently.
  • You take several medications, or a complex regimen that depends on timing, on food or on frequent monitoring.
  • You have mobility needs we should account for when planning sessions and transfers.
  • Your doctor gave you instructions about traveling, exercising or not exercising, and you are not sure how they fit with a retreat.

Why we ask for that conversation

It is not a formality. There are practical reasons, and we share them so you can decide with confidence.

The retreat is in person, away from home. For 5 days you are in a new place with a different routine, movement sessions and island activities. If your health situation needs close follow-up, frequent monitoring or immediate access to your usual care team, it is better to plan for that before you travel.

Your body may respond differently to a new routine. More movement, changes in schedule and food, heat and travel are changes that, for some people at some times, call for more care. That is not a reason to stay home; it is a reason to plan.

A small group lets us plan with you, but it does not replace your medical team. In a small group we can adapt the pace and the sessions, but we cannot offer continuous medical monitoring or treat your condition. Better to know that up front.

And sometimes the most sensible choice is to wait for a later group. We would rather say so plainly before you reserve than after.

How it works: the application and the physician review

The process is simple and designed so that no important conversation goes unheld.

1. You talk to us, if it applies. If you recognize yourself in any of the situations above, write or call before you apply. You do not need to have every answer first.

2. You apply online. The application includes questions about your health history: diagnoses, medications, surgeries, allergies and anything else you think we should know. Be thorough; the information is there to look after you, not to judge you.

3. Dra. Nieves reviews your history. If needed she will ask follow-up questions or ask to talk before your application is accepted. She may suggest you speak with your own doctor first.

4. If you are accepted, you reserve with a deposit. Only then is your place reserved.

A deposit reserves your place. The amount and terms are confirmed in your acceptance email.

Applications close November 5, 2026, so if you have health questions, it is best to write to us early.

What to have on hand for that conversation

You do not need a full medical file. This helps:

  • A list of your diagnoses and the medications you take, with doses if you know them.
  • Approximate dates of any recent surgery or hospital stay.
  • Any instructions from your doctor about travel, exercise or eating.
  • Allergies and food restrictions.
  • Mobility or access needs.
  • The questions that worry you most.

Talk to your own doctor, too

If you have a diagnosed condition, your doctor or specialist knows your history best. Before you apply, it is a good idea to tell them you are considering a multi-day program with movement, changes in food and travel, and ask whether they have any guidance for you.

Do not change or stop any medication on your own because you are attending a retreat. Any adjustment is for your doctor to decide, not a wellness program. If you will be traveling with medication, see traveling with medications.

To understand what the physician does at the retreat and what she does not, see medical wellness retreat and the physician visit and labs.

If your question is about a specific topic

Some health questions come up again and again. These guides explain what the retreat looks like from those starting points, always with the same limit: it is education and habits, not treatment.

If you are in a crisis, or have felt low for weeks

This retreat is not mental health care and is not a substitute for it. If you are in a crisis, or you have felt low most days for two weeks or more, talk to a health professional before planning a trip.

In a crisis, call or text [988](tel:988) or call Línea PAS at 1-800-981-0023, any time of day. If you are in immediate danger, or have chest pain, fainting or shortness of breath, call 911. Outside Puerto Rico, call or text 988.

Rest, mobility coaching, meditation and breathwork, nutrition sessions and a physician assessment, with island activities. The application asks about your health history and the doctor reviews it. Open to everyone; not treatment.

  • Five days starting November 15, 2026
  • Applications close November 5, 2026

How we care for you

  • We evaluate, diagnose and treat; if needed, we give you a lab order for a lab near you.

  • We see adults and children of all ages. Patients under 21: a parent with patria potestad (parental authority) or a legal guardian is on camera for the whole visit and shows photo ID.

  • Real-time video visit. We send you a secure video link. It works on your phone, tablet or computer.

  • If appropriate, the doctor prescribes and we send your prescription to your pharmacy.

  • You must be physically in Puerto Rico during the visit (visitors, tourists and cruise passengers are welcome).

Frequently asked questions

Can I go to a wellness retreat if I have a chronic condition?

Talk to us before you apply. A stable chronic condition does not rule you out automatically, but we want to plan with you and have the physician review your history. A physician assessment with Dra. Diana Nieves Castro, MD, and lab work when it is clinically appropriate. She provides all the medical care at the retreat.

Can I come if I am pregnant?

Write or call us before you apply. Pregnancy is one of the situations where we want to talk first, to plan safely and, sometimes, to decide together that it is better to wait. Talk to your obstetric provider about the trip as well.

I had surgery recently. Can I attend?

Tell us before you apply. Recent surgery calls for a conversation first: we want to know what was done, when, and what your surgeon told you. Check with your surgical team about traveling and moving as well.

I take several medications. Is that a problem?

Not by itself, but a complex regimen is a good reason to talk to us first. List your medications on the application, and do not change or stop any on your own; those decisions belong to your doctor.

Who reviews my health history?

The application includes questions about your health history, and Dra. Diana Nieves Castro, MD, a general practitioner licensed in Puerto Rico, reviews it. She may ask follow-up questions or suggest you speak with your own doctor first.

Will the retreat treat or improve my condition?

No. The retreat does not treat any condition and does not replace your own doctor. It offers rest, movement, meditation and nutrition sessions and a physician assessment; what you do with that information you decide with your own doctor.

Can my application be declined for health reasons?

It can happen that, after reviewing your history, we recommend waiting for another cohort or speaking with your doctor first. We will say so plainly, and before you reserve with a deposit.

Do I need to talk to my own doctor before applying?

If you have a diagnosed condition, it is a good idea. Tell them you are considering a multi-day program with movement, changes in food and travel, and ask whether they have guidance for you.

What if I have mobility or access needs?

Tell us when you apply so we can plan with you. Tell us about your mobility, dietary or other access needs on the application, and we will work with you on what is possible.

Is the retreat held in English?

Yes. The retreat is held in English and is planned for travelers from the mainland US. Dra. Nieves speaks Spanish and English.
