Dengue in the southeast: Arroyo ranks first on the island

According to the Department of Health's week 37 report (published September 23, 2026), Arroyo has Puerto Rico's highest dengue rate in 2026: 240.90 cases per 100,000 residents in weeks 1–37 (36 cases). Neighboring Guayama is second, at 238.47. Over the same period, Patillas reported 8 cases, Yabucoa 6 and Maunabo 2.

If someone at home has a fever with body aches, pain behind the eyes or a rash, learn the dengue warning signs. The doctor can assess them by video and tell you whether to go to the ER; with severe belly pain, nonstop vomiting, bleeding or unusual drowsiness, go to the ER or call 911.

Yabucoa is where Hurricane Maria made landfall: per the National Hurricane Center, its center crossed the southeast coast near Yabucoa on September 20, 2017, with maximum winds near 135 knots. Since 2020 the town has lost 6.1% of its population (from 30,426 to 28,580, per the Census), and 27.4% are 65 or older.

Hurricanes on the southeast coast

The National Hurricane Center's report on Maria estimates that storm surge flooded 4 to 7 feet above ground level on the southeast coast, "primarily in the municipalities of Yabucoa, Maunabo, Patillas, and Arroyo". Before each season, prepare your hurricane medicine supply and read how to look after your health after a hurricane, including the risk of leptospirosis after flooding.
