A 5 day wellness retreat: why five days is enough to reset your rhythm

A 5 day wellness retreat is a short, physician-supported stay in a small group, built to change your rhythm without leaving work for weeks. It will not rebuild your life or act as treatment, but it can interrupt the pattern you are in and send you home with one or two habits you can actually keep.

The week you keep promising yourself

You know the feeling. Sunday evening arrives and the week ahead is already sitting on your chest. You answer messages in the car, in the kitchen, in bed. You tell yourself things will calm down after this deadline, this quarter, this season. They do not.

Maybe you sleep, but not well. Maybe you move less than you want to, eat standing up, and say yes to one more thing. Nothing is wrong enough to call it a crisis. Everything is just a little too much, for a little too long.

Staying as you are has a cost, and it is easy to miss because it arrives slowly: less patience, less sleep, fewer days that feel like yours. A long vacation would help, but a long vacation means weeks of coverage, weeks of explaining, and a pile waiting when you return. So the break never happens.

A 5 day wellness retreat is built for that person. It is short enough to fit around a job and a household, and long enough to change the rhythm you are in. It is a small-group stay in Puerto Rico with a licensed physician involved: 5 days, 10 places per group, and nobody asking you to be anywhere but where you are. This guide explains why five days can be enough, what the days look like, and how to ask for the time.

Why five days is enough to change your rhythm

Five days will not rebuild a life, and no honest retreat says otherwise. What five days can do is interrupt a pattern. After a day or two away from the inbox, the commute and the usual routines, most people notice what their body has been asking for: an earlier night, a slower meal, a walk with no destination.

That is the idea behind a short wellness retreat or a wellness reset retreat. You are not trying to become a different person. You are giving yourself a stretch of days where sleep, movement, food and quiet are the plan rather than the leftovers.

Research on vacations adds a caution worth hearing. A 2009 meta-analysis found that the gains in health and wellbeing from time off were modest and faded within a few weeks of returning to work. So the point of a reset retreat is not the five days alone. It is what you carry back: one or two habits you actually keep, and a clearer view of what in your week needs to change.

There is another reason a short stay works for many people: it is easier to say yes to five days than to five weeks. A small, concrete commitment gets kept. A huge one gets postponed.

And there is a practical reason. Sleep is the first thing to come back when nobody is messaging you at eleven at night. The CDC recommends that adults 18 to 60 sleep 7 or more hours a night, and several nights in a row on a regular schedule show you what that feels like, which for many people is something they had almost forgotten.

Longer retreats have their place, and some people prefer them. But many retreats of a week or more ask for an absence your life does not allow right now. A short format removes that excuse without asking you to pretend you have no responsibilities.

How the days work

The Health Initiative (THI) runs an in-person wellness retreat in Puerto Rico: 5 days starting November 15, 2026, with 10 places per group, at $3,500 per person. It is held at a hacienda in Río Grande, Puerto Rico. A new group starts on the 1st and the 15th of every month. The retreat is held in English.

Here is what a day looks like. It is not a fixed schedule, and we share the full schedule with accepted guests:

A typical day, not a fixed schedule (we share the full schedule with accepted guests): gentle morning movement such as gentle stretching and mobility, breakfast together, a medical or education session, free time or an island activity, dinner, and an evening meditation, with phones kept away during sessions and meals.

Arrive on November 15, 2026; the retreat lasts 5 days and you depart after the last one. Airport transfers are included, and we confirm arrival and departure details with accepted guests.

Simple, comfortable lodging at the hacienda. Room details, including whether rooms are shared or private, are confirmed in your acceptance email.

A small group has a practical advantage: nobody gets lost in a crowd. The medical side is provided by Dra. Diana Nieves Castro, MD, a general practice physician licensed in Puerto Rico, with an assessment and labs when clinically appropriate. See what to expect at the retreat and the physician visit and labs for the detail.

Included in the price:

  • Lodging and meals
  • Medical care and labs when clinically appropriate
  • Mobility coaching, meditation and breathwork, and nutrition sessions
  • Island activities and airport transfers

How to take the time off work

Five days is an easier ask than a long vacation. If you plan around a weekend, many people cover it with only a few days of leave. Check the rules at your own workplace, because every employer is different, and think of the time as a small investment in your ability to work well. This is what tends to help:

  • Ask early. A month of notice sounds reasonable; a week sounds like an emergency.
  • Say what it is. "I am taking five days to rest and come back with a better rhythm" is a complete sentence. You do not owe anyone a diagnosis.
  • Hand over a plan, not an apology. Decide who covers what, what counts as urgent, and how to reach you if it truly is.
  • Schedule the return. Keep your first morning back clear and do not fill day one with meetings.
  • Switch off what you can. A clear auto-reply does more than any promise to "just check in".

The honest objections

"Is it worth it for only five days?" It depends on what you expect. If you expect it to change your job or your health, no. If you expect a real pause, a different rhythm and a plan for going back, it is a reasonable bet. If cost is the worry, see what a wellness retreat includes and costs.

"I am not a spiritual or yoga person." You do not need to be. The days mix gentle movement, meals, education sessions, free time and island activities. Meditation and breathwork are easy practices you can try or let pass. The retreat is open to everyone.

"What about my health condition?" The retreat is wellness, not treatment, and it does not replace your own doctor. If you take medicines or have a condition, say so on the application so we can plan your week safely. See who the retreat is for and, if you are running on empty, the burnout retreat guide.

"I do not speak English well." The sessions are in English. Dra. Nieves Castro speaks English and Spanish.

"What if I cannot relax?" It is a common worry. That is why the retreat does not ask you to perform relaxation: there is free time, unhurried meals and nobody measuring your progress. Some people rest from the first day and others take two. Both are normal.

When to talk to us or a doctor first

Talk to us before you apply if you are pregnant, had recent surgery, had a recent hospital stay, or have a condition that is not stable. This is not a list of people who cannot come; it is so we can plan your week safely.

If your mood has been low most days for two weeks or more, or you have lost interest in things you used to enjoy, that needs care, not just rest. In a crisis, call or text [988](tel:988) (it works in Puerto Rico and on the mainland; press 2 for Spanish), call Línea PAS at 1-800-981-0023, or call 911.

A simple first step: read how to apply to the retreat. Applying is not an exam and not a commitment to pay.

Frequently asked questions

Is five days enough for a wellness retreat?

It is enough to interrupt a pattern and try another rhythm, not to rebuild your life. Studies on vacations show gains fade within weeks if nothing else changes, so the plan and the habits you bring home matter most.

What is a short wellness retreat?

A stay of a few days with rest, gentle movement, meals and education sessions, designed for people who cannot be away for weeks. THI’s runs 5 days, in a small group of 10 places, and is held in English.

How do I ask for five days off work?

Ask early, say plainly what it is, hand over a coverage plan, and keep your first morning back clear. You do not need to give a diagnosis to ask for time to rest.

Is the retreat medical treatment?

No. It is wellness: rest, habits, education and a physician assessment with Dra. Diana Nieves Castro, MD, with labs when clinically appropriate. It does not replace your own doctor.

How often does a new group start?

A new group starts on the 1st and the 15th of every month. The next open group starts November 15, 2026, and applications for it close November 5, 2026.

Is the retreat held in English?

Yes. The retreat is held in English and is planned for travellers from the mainland US. Dra. Nieves Castro speaks English and Spanish.

What should I do if I feel hopeless?

Talk to someone today. Call or text 988, which works in Puerto Rico and on the mainland, or call Línea PAS at 1-800-981-0023. If you are in immediate danger, call 911.
