Doctor in Santurce & Miramar: Which ER Takes Whom

If you need a doctor in Santurce or Miramar, know first that the Hospital Pavía Santurce ER is adults only and that we could not confirm the ER at San Jorge Children's Hospital. For something common, Dr. Diana Nieves Castro, MD, can see you by video for US$79 while you are physically in Puerto Rico, including from a hotel near the Convention Center.

Santurce emergency rooms: which one for whom

Santurce has more than one hospital, and they do not all take everyone. Before you set off:

  • Hospital Pavía Santurce: adults only. Calle Prof. Augusto Rodríguez #1462, Santurce. Phone 787-641-1616. Per its page, the ER is open 24 hours, 7 days, and does not take pediatric emergencies.
  • Doctors' Center Hospital San Juan: Calle San Rafael #1395, Santurce. The hospital advertises an ER, but the published phone numbers conflict (787-999-7620 on its site, 787-723-2950 in a directory) and we could not confirm the right one. Unconfirmed: call before you go.
  • San Jorge Children's Hospital (Ave. San Jorge): a children's hospital that appears in directories, but its old website no longer works and we could not confirm its ER or phone number. Do not rely on it without calling first.

With a child, or if you prefer another hospital

The nearest confirmed pediatric ER is at Ashford Presbyterian, to the north at 1451 Ashford Ave (787-721-2160, ext. 1095–1098), which says it runs separate adult and pediatric ERs; details are on the Condado page. To the south in Hato Rey, Auxilio Mutuo (Ave. Ponce de León, Parada 37½, 787-758-2000) lists adult ER extensions 2656 or 2696 and pediatric ER extensions 1312 or 1426; the Hato Rey, Río Piedras and Centro Médico ERs are on the San Juan residential page. If it is serious, call 911.

At the Convention Center and Miramar hotels

Ashford Presbyterian describes itself as the official emergency provider for the Convention Center and metro-area hotels. If someone collapses or has chest pain during an event, alert venue staff and call 911.

For anything non-urgent (a cold picked up on the flight, a medication that ran out, a rash), you can request a video visit from your room between sessions. Is there a 24-hour pharmacy in Santurce? Roberto H Todd and Calle Loíza

From the Walgreens locator:

  • Walgreens, 700 Ave Roberto H Todd, PR 00907, 787-945-7710, a short walk from Miramar. The store opens 6 a.m. and the pharmacy counter 8 a.m.; neither is 24 hours.
  • Walgreens, 1963 Calle Loíza, PR 00911, 787-728-0033, on the east side of Santurce: the store is open 24 hours, the counter is not (it opens 9 a.m.). More on the Ocean Park page.

We could not verify evening closing times for Santurce's pharmacy counters. For a prescription in the small hours, the nearest counter we confirmed as open 24 hours is outside the neighborhood, at Walgreens, 2505 Carr 841, Guaynabo (787-287-0528), with a 1:30–2 a.m. break.

Urgent care in Santurce: what we could not verify

A doctor in Santurce by telehealth, for residents

Santurce and Miramar are not just hotels: many residents have lived here for years and need follow-up care. By video the doctor can treat flu, sore throat, UTI symptoms, allergies and rashes, and follow up high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes or cholesterol when they are stable. City heat and rooftop mosquitoes

Walking Santurce at midday is heat exposure too: the CDC lists cramps, heavy sweating, dizziness, headache, weakness and nausea as possible heat-illness signs. Standing water on patios and flat roofs breeds the dengue mosquito. We could not confirm a pediatric ER inside Santurce: we could not verify San Jorge Children's Hospital's ER, and Pavía Santurce is adults only. The nearest confirmed pediatric ER is Ashford Presbyterian in Condado. If a child is struggling to breathe, call 911.
Does the Pavía Santurce ER see kids?
No. According to its official page, its ER is for adults. With a child, go to Ashford Presbyterian, which has a pediatric ER, or call 911.
I'm at a convention in Miramar and got sick. What should I do?
If it is an emergency, alert staff and call 911. If it is something common, you can request a video visit from your hotel; you just need to be in Puerto Rico during the visit.
Is there a 24-hour pharmacy in Santurce?
There is a 24-hour store, the Calle Loíza Walgreens, but its pharmacy counter opens at 9 a.m. The nearest counter we verified as open 24 hours is Walgreens, 2505 Carr 841, Guaynabo.
