Pityriasis rosea: what it is and how long it lasts
Pityriasis rosea is a rash that starts with one larger pink, oval patch (the herald patch) and, days later, spreads as smaller patches over the chest, back and belly. It looks alarming, but it is not dangerous, not thought to be contagious, and it goes away on its own, usually in 4 to 8 weeks. The doctor can recognize it by video and help with the itch.

If you choose a time less than 24 hours away, it can't be cancelled or changed.
If the clinic can't see you, for example because of a technical problem on our side, we refund you in full.

What is pityriasis rosea?
Pityriasis rosea is a skin rash believed to be caused by a virus. According to MedlinePlus, it is most common in young adults, in women more than men, and in fall and spring.
It is not thought to spread from person to person. It can be frightening to watch it spread, but it clears by itself.

Pityriasis rosea symptoms
It starts with a single large patch, the herald patch. Several days later more patches appear, which can follow the lines of the skin and form a "Christmas tree" pattern on the back. Some people have a headache, tiredness, a sore throat or a mild fever before the rash.

Treatment and how long it lasts
It does not need treatment to go away: according to MedlinePlus, an episode usually lasts 4 to 8 weeks, sometimes only 3 and sometimes up to 12. Treatment is for the itch.
What helps: gentle lukewarm baths, moisturizers, hydrocortisone cream and, if the itch keeps you up at night, an oral antihistamine. Moderate sun can help, without burning: see how to avoid sunburn.
If you are pregnant: the American Academy of Dermatology advises letting your obstetrician know if you develop pityriasis rosea during pregnancy.
When to get in-person care or go to the ER
Pityriasis rosea is not an emergency. For your safety, get in-person care or call 911 if you notice:
