Adventure wellness retreat in Puerto Rico: island activities, at your own pace

An adventure wellness retreat mixes rest with outdoor activities, such as snorkeling or walks, in a small group and at a pace your body can handle. THI’s retreat in Puerto Rico includes island activities and starts with a physician assessment; you choose how much you do in each. It is wellness, not an extreme sport and not treatment, and it is held in English.

Is this an emergency?

This is not an emergency service. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room if you have:

  • Chest pain, shortness of breath or fainting with effort: call 911, do not wait to travel
  • Recent surgery, an unresolved injury or a change in your health before you travel: talk to your own doctor first
  • Thoughts of harming yourself or ending your life: call or text 988, or call Línea PAS at 1-800-981-0023

You have been watching the water from the shore for years

There is a scene you may know. You get to the beach on some trip, you look at the clear water, and you think you would like to get in, see what is underneath, walk a little farther than everyone else. And you stay in the chair. Not because you do not want to: because for years your body has gone from the car to the office and from the office to the couch, and you are not sure what it would handle.

That doubt is reasonable, and it is exactly why a well-planned adventure exists. Not an excursion for athletes that you have to survive, but a few days where someone has already asked the question you are asking: what can my body do safely, and what would be good for it?

If you are searching for an adventure wellness retreat, this may be what you want: to leave your routine with your body in motion, without giving up rest and without anyone pushing you past what is good for you. That is what we explain here. The retreat is held in English.

Adventure at your own measure: what can happen on the island

The word adventure can suggest something this is not. At this retreat there is no extreme climbing, no endurance tests and no stopwatches. It means outdoor activities on an island, done in a small group, at a level you choose.

Below is what can be done in the area and across the island. Read it as a range of possibilities, not a promised program: what your group does depends on the itinerary for your start date, the season, the weather, sea conditions and your physician assessment.

Every activity is optional and none of them is an exam: you can watch, try, or stay and rest. We confirm your group’s itinerary when your application is accepted.

The island lends itself to this. Río Grande sits next to El Yunque National Forest and a stretch of coast; read the guide to El Yunque and Río Grande and the ideas for a nature wellness retreat, a rainforest retreat and a beach and island retreat.

  • Snorkeling
  • Kayaking or paddleboarding on calm water
  • Beach time and swimming
  • A walk in El Yunque rainforest
  • A visit to a waterfall or river pool, depending on conditions
  • Birdwatching and wildlife walks, such as listening for coquí frogs at night
  • An evening trip to a bioluminescent bay, depending on the season and the moon
  • A boat trip to a cay or small island
  • A gentle adventure activity, such as a zip line, for those who want it
  • A horseback ride
  • A visit to a coffee or cacao farm
  • A Puerto Rican cooking class or a dance class
  • An afternoon in Old San Juan
  • An evening of stargazing
  • Gentle outdoor movement in the morning

Not every activity runs in every group. We confirm your group's itinerary with accepted guests, and every activity is optional.

Snorkeling, walks and kayaking: what to know before you decide

You are probably looking for something more specific than “adventure”: a snorkeling retreat, a hiking retreat, a kayak retreat. Here is an honest answer for each.

Snorkeling. It is one of the island activities we expect to offer. If your group’s itinerary and the sea allow it, you need to feel comfortable in the water to enjoy it. If you are an unsure swimmer, say so on your application: if a water activity runs, the team will talk through what feels comfortable with you. Nobody asks you to go deeper than you want.

Walks. Walking through the forest or along the coast is the most accessible way to move more. It can be done slowly, with stops, and it adjusts to what your assessment suggests. Read what a rainforest retreat looks like.

Kayaking, scuba and other activities. We do not promise them. If one shows up on your group’s list, we will tell you when you are accepted, along with what each asks of you. We would rather say less and deliver than advertise a program we cannot promise.

If you are looking for a certification dive trip or a sports camp, this is not that retreat, and we say so here so you do not lose your time.

Why the physician assessment comes first

An adventure for someone who barely moves needs an order of operations. First we look at how you are; then we decide what makes sense to do. That is why THI’s retreat starts with the medical side.

Dra. Diana Nieves Castro, a general practice physician licensed in Puerto Rico, does a physician assessment and orders labs when clinically appropriate. If that assessment advises going slower with an activity, that is what happens. If you have a health condition, talk to us first.

We do not promise specific tests or results. To see what the medical side covers, read the physician visit and labs.

A common-sense rule for anyone: talk to your own doctor before you travel if you have recent surgery, an unresolved injury, a heart or lung condition, or you are pregnant. That is not a list of people who cannot come. It is so your week is safe.

What a day looks like

THI runs an in-person wellness retreat in Puerto Rico: 5 days starting November 15, 2026, with 10 places, at $3,500 per person. Applications for the first group close November 5, 2026.

Here is what a typical day looks like. It is not a promised schedule; see what to expect at the retreat for more.

A typical day, not a fixed schedule (we share the full schedule with accepted guests): gentle morning movement such as gentle stretching and mobility, breakfast together, a medical or education session, free time or an island activity, dinner, and an evening meditation, with phones kept away during sessions and meals.

Included in the price:

  • Lodging and meals
  • A physician assessment, and labs when clinically appropriate
  • Mobility coaching, meditation and breathwork, and nutrition sessions
  • Island activities and airport transfers

The honest questions

I am not athletic. Good: this retreat is not built for athletes. Mobility sessions start from where you are, and island activities are done as a group, at your pace. If you want something more demanding, see the fitness and wellness retreat guide.

I do not swim well. Say so on your application. It can be planned around, and there is plenty to do on land. You do not have to be in the water to be at the retreat.

I have a mobility limitation. Tell us what it is. What can be accommodated depends on the activity and is confirmed with you; see accessibility and dietary needs.

Is it safe? No outdoor activity is free of risk. That is why there is a physician assessment, a small group and the chance to take part at your level. Sun, hydration and sea conditions matter on any island day.

Is it worth the price? A fair question. Read the breakdown in what a wellness retreat includes and costs.
