Nature retreat in Puerto Rico: what the forest and the sea do that an office cannot

A nature retreat is a short stay outdoors to rest, move and rebuild habits you can keep. THI’s is a wellness retreat in Río Grande, Puerto Rico, a town next to El Yunque National Forest, for a small group and with a physician assessment. Nature is the setting, not the treatment. The retreat is held in English.

Is this an emergency?

This is not an emergency service. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room if you have:

  • Chest pain, shortness of breath or fainting: call 911, do not wait to travel
  • A recent change in a health condition, or a new medicine, before you travel: talk to your own doctor first
  • Thoughts of harming yourself or ending your life: call or text 988, or call Línea PAS at 1-800-981-0023

When did you last sit in quiet

Think of the last time you were somewhere with no screen in sight, no notification arriving and nobody waiting on a reply. If you have to think hard, you already have the answer that matters.

Spending your days between walls, artificial light and alerts can have a cost that never shows up on a bill. You may recognise it in yourself: sleep that breaks into pieces, a body that goes still, attention that scatters. You put it down to work, to age, to the season. You rarely put it down to the place where you spend the day.

Maybe that is why you are searching for a nature retreat: not for the photo, but because you want a place where the day sets the pace and not the calendar. This guide explains what an outdoor wellness retreat in Puerto Rico is, what it includes, and what it does not promise. The retreat is held in English.

What a nature retreat is (and is not)

A nature retreat is a short stay with a simple structure, in a place where the landscape is part of the day: walking among trees, eating outdoors, breathing with the window open. It is closer to an organized pause than to a sightseeing trip.

What it is not: it is not a survival camp, not an expedition and not medical treatment. It is not a silent retreat either. It is a small group with a clear rhythm, and you take part at the level that feels right.

People searching for a forest retreat or an outdoor wellness retreat usually want the same thing: to step out of routine without having to organize all of it. That is what a stay with lodging, meals and sessions already prepared solves.

Why Puerto Rico, and why Río Grande

Río Grande, the town where the retreat is held, sits next to El Yunque National Forest, a US national forest in the east of the island. It is a mountain area covered in vegetation, with rivers and trails, a short distance from the coast. Read the guide to El Yunque and Río Grande to see what the area is like and how to get there.

That means forest and sea sit a short distance apart within the same stay. For someone who wants nature without half a day on the road, that is an unusual combination. Puerto Rico is also a US territory: a US citizen needs no passport to arrive. See the travel guide from US cities.

The retreat is held at a hacienda in Río Grande, Puerto Rico. The exact location is shared with confirmed guests.

People who type "wildlife retreat" usually want to know about animals. Puerto Rico has its own wildlife, such as the coquí, the tiny frog whose call you hear at night. To be honest: we do not promise you will see any particular animal. Nature keeps no schedule, and we will not sell you a sighting we cannot promise.

What nature does and what the team does

It helps to separate the two. Nature offers the setting: fresh air, natural light, movement without a gym and a break from noise. That is not a promise of results, and nobody asks you to feel any particular way.

The team offers the structure. Dra. Diana Nieves Castro, a general practice physician licensed in Puerto Rico, does a physician assessment and orders labs when clinically appropriate. We do not promise specific tests or results. Read the physician visit and labs.

The sessions are mobility, meditation and breathwork, and nutrition. You do them outdoors or indoors depending on the day. The retreat does not replace your own doctor, who stays in charge of your care.

How the days work

THI runs an in-person wellness retreat in Puerto Rico: 5 days starting November 15, 2026, with 10 places, at $3,500 per person. Applications for the first group close November 5, 2026.

Here is what a typical day looks like. It is not a promised schedule; see what to expect at the retreat for more.

A typical day, not a fixed schedule (we share the full schedule with accepted guests): gentle morning movement such as gentle stretching and mobility, breakfast together, a medical or education session, free time or an island activity, dinner, and an evening meditation, with phones kept away during sessions and meals.

Included in the price:

  • Lodging and meals
  • A physician assessment, and labs when clinically appropriate
  • Mobility coaching, meditation and breathwork, and nutrition sessions
  • Island activities and airport transfers

What you can do in Puerto Rico’s nature

The nature around the retreat offers more than fits into a stay of 5 days. That is why we do not promise a fixed list: what your group does depends on the itinerary for your start date, the season, the weather, sea conditions and your physician assessment.

Everything below is a possibility, and every activity is optional. You can head out with the group, stay and rest, or take a stretch of quiet. Your group’s itinerary is confirmed with accepted guests.

  • Snorkeling
  • Kayaking or paddleboarding on calm water
  • Beach time and swimming
  • A walk in El Yunque rainforest
  • A visit to a waterfall or river pool, depending on conditions
  • Birdwatching and wildlife walks, such as listening for coquí frogs at night
  • An evening trip to a bioluminescent bay, depending on the season and the moon
  • A boat trip to a cay or small island
  • A gentle adventure activity, such as a zip line, for those who want it
  • A horseback ride
  • A visit to a coffee or cacao farm
  • A Puerto Rican cooking class or a dance class
  • An afternoon in Old San Juan
  • An evening of stargazing
  • Gentle outdoor movement in the morning

Not every activity runs in every group. We confirm your group's itinerary with accepted guests, and every activity is optional.

A small private-group stay, not a camp or a resort

It is a private stay for a small group, at a hacienda in Río Grande, Puerto Rico. You do not sleep in a tent or carry a pack, and there are no hundreds of other guests or an entertainment programme.

Simple, comfortable lodging at the hacienda. Room details, including whether rooms are shared or private, are confirmed in your acceptance email.

Fresh, home-style meals built around whole foods, with Puerto Rican flavors. Tell us about allergies and food preferences on your application.

What you gain: close attention from the physician and the people who lead the sessions, and people who are there for the same reason. What you give up: the variety of a big resort. If you prefer that, a resort may suit you better, and we would tell you so.

The honest questions

I am not an outdoors person. You do not need to be. There is no need to know hiking or plants. Activities are scaled to each person and you choose how much you do. Read what to expect at the retreat.

What if it rains? It is a rainforest, and it rains. Sessions and meals do not depend on the sun, and a rainy day is part of what the place is. If you need dry weather every day, an outdoor retreat in the Caribbean will not suit you.

What if I have a health condition or limited mobility? Often it is possible, but talk to us first if you are pregnant, had recent surgery or need mobility support. Read access and dietary needs. Tell us about your mobility, dietary or other access needs on the application, and we will work with you on what is possible.

Is it worth it? It depends on what you want. If you want a few days on a beach, there are simpler options. If you want a structured pause, with a physician assessment and a plan for going home, it is a different thing. For the breakdown, read what a wellness retreat includes and costs.

To see whether it fits you, read who the retreat is for. It is open to everyone.

In-person retreat in Puerto Rico

The first step

Nobody needs to decide everything today. You read, you ask what you want to ask, and you apply when you are ready. If you have been telling yourself for a while that you need real time outdoors, this is a way to make it concrete without a long planning project.

The first step is small: you reserve your place on the retreat page. Fill in the short form and pay the deposit through secure checkout. Our team then writes to you, and our physician reviews your health in a private step. If the retreat is not a good fit for you, we refund your deposit in full. The steps are in how to apply to the retreat.

If you want a different angle, see retreat vs vacation, the rainforest retreat or the beach and island retreat.

If you are going through a hard time with your mental health, a retreat is not the answer: call or text 988, or call Línea PAS at 1-800-981-0023.

How we care for you

  • We evaluate, diagnose and treat; if needed, we give you a lab order for a lab near you.

  • We see adults and children of all ages. Patients under 21: a parent with patria potestad (parental authority) or a legal guardian is on camera for the whole visit and shows photo ID.

  • Real-time video visit. We send you a secure video link. It works on your phone, tablet or computer.

  • If appropriate, the doctor prescribes and we send your prescription to your pharmacy.

  • You must be physically in Puerto Rico during the visit (visitors, tourists and cruise passengers are welcome).

  • In an emergency, call 911.
